Well, I'm currently a SAHM and a big part of why I'm going back to work (besides the love I have for my career) is to pay for the kids to go to Catholic school. We could actually live comfortably off of my husband's income, but in order to pay for private school, someone needs to contribute a significant percentage of our household income to our budget. For us, the public schools in our area are less than desirable and we disagree with some of the state and county educational laws; so a private school is our best bet for getting what we want for the kids.

Also my husband works full time and does side jobs, right now. He can work from home, while the kids are sleeping, and since it does help our budget and his resume, it's something we'll continue to do.

@yoursilverlining: I agree 100%.

I am also a product of public schools, and I believe that in order to raise the level of education that all children receive, they should all (in theory) attend together.

no. if I was a SAHM, I would go back to work to help out with supplies, things like that, but we plan on sending our children to public schools. we both went to public schools and got really good educations. we also plan on living in an area with a good school district.

There is no time for second jobs in our house - I already work 40 hours a week and my husband works at least 80. So...no!

Would I go back to work to pay for school? Yes.

No; I'm a big fan of public education and supplementing at home as needed (or with specific subject tutoring as needed).

If I was able to retire before my LO went to college, I would definitely consider going back to work part time to help defray the costs of LO's college education, especially for an advanced degree, but also wouldn't take on a second job in addition to a regular full time to help pay for school.

I doubt it, but I also feel pretty committed to sending my kids to public school (unless, as @Foodnerd81 said, they have a special need that requires a special school). The quality of the public schools nearby will be a major factor when DH and I are looking for a house.

It depends on how much of our time those jobs would take up. We live in a somewhat decent school district but would prefer that our child not go to school with the kids who live around us so we've been thinking about what we need to do to afford private school.

Especially for preschool/daycare.. Big ol' fat NO.

I also wouldn't for a high-school private school. I would move to a better district before I took on another job

Agreeing with everyone else-- not if it took away family time. I think the things they will learn being at home with their parents would trump special schooling-- UNLESS they had a special need that required or would be helped a LOT by the special school, then I'd consider it, but I'd try to make major cutbacks to spending first.

Nope, BUT I have no problem asking the grandparents to contribute!

My mom actually suggested this when G was little... She told me that if she had known then what she knew now about education she would've done it in a heartbeat. My dad paid G's tuition for pre-k, kinder, & 1st grade. Now we homeschool & a year's worth of "school" is about 2 months worth tuition.

ETA: Sending G to private school wasn't *just* about the educational aspect, but also environmental. We wanted G to be spending the majority of his time (since school does take the majority of the child's time) to be in a place that supported what we were trying to instill in him character wise.

If all public schools were awful or like others said, if lo had a special need. But for me it would take a lot. I'm a sahm planning to work part time when the kids go to school. So to work even more and spend less time with lo would make me sad.

Nope. I agree with @yellowbird: if there was a special need, we would definitely consider it,...but that kind of sacrifice just so they *might* have a better education? No way, it would harm our family dynamic too much.

No way. If it interferes with my time with LO then i wouldn't. Even if it didn't, the hours would catch up to you.

Ummm, no because that sounds like it would mega interfere with family life. And great schooling is important, but not to the detriment of the family!

Maybe I feel that way because I went to a good ol' public school in the country and I turned out just fine, went to college on a scholarship, etc.!
