@Mrs. Washi Tape: my MIL has but for work not date night. Probably if it weren't that bad and we had already left or if we had maybe prepaid something expensive, they would but if we hadn't gone yet and we wouldn't lose out on $$ we would end up cancelling. I would feel guilty about going on date night and leaving he grandparents to deal with a (eta: very) sick kid (eta colds don't count, imo) who probably wants mommy anyway.

My mom would & she has! But she would probably let me know so I could decide if we should come home. It would be hard for me to enjoy a night out if LO was super sick.

Yes, they would. My mom and his mom would take care of her, sick or not. They would probably call us to let us know and let us decide if we wanted to come home. But they would probably say, "M got sick, I've got this. Don't come home."

My parents wouldn't have any problem with it, but if they did, I would totally understand--I don't think I'd sign up for puke duty voluntarily unless it was a true emergency. Sorry you guys weren't able to enjoy your night out! :(

Thanks for all the responses! It is so interesting to see how different grandparent relationships can be.

In our case, I think a big factor was probably that my mom and sister (who lives at home) tend to get sick a lot and are kind of paranoid about sickness. I think we would have come home either way just to be there for my son when he isn't feeling well. But then again, it would have been kind of nice to be able to make the choice ourselves!

I guess I chalk it up to one of the advantages to being the grandparent rather than the parent - you don't have to deal with throw up.

@LBee: Good point. My mom does work full time and as I mentioned above, doesn't have a great immune system so I bet that did play into it.

In your case, a kid that is sick 15 mins after arriving with no symptoms, I don't think they would even let me know until we got home but if they were really sick I think they would want us to come home.

Only my mom babysits but won't come near us if we're sick. LO1 brought home the stomach bug and DH, LO2, and I (pregnant) all came down with it 36 hours later. LO1 was fine at that point but my mom wouldn't come to watch him while the rest of us recovered. Can't say I blame her! It's a different story if it's just a cold but definitely no if there is throw up involved!

They'll watch DD if she has a minor illness like a cold, but they wouldn't watch her if she had the flu. They got really sick from one of my nieces a couple years ago and are more cautious since then. I can't blame them! When little kids get sick they spread their germs all over.

So I would have expected my parents would babysit my sick kids, but that has not been the case in reality! They caught HFM from my son a year ago and ever since then refuse to babysit when either kid is sick.

My mom has taken care of DD when she was puking because DH and I were puking too. If we were out and DD started puking, my mom would tell me as an FYI, not because she wanted me to come home (though I would come home).

My parents have too many health problems and do not feel well enough to babysit. DH's mom will watch the kids for a few hours when we see them twice a year. If the kids threw up I think she would text us but not expect us to come right home.
DH's dad will not baby sit.

I think they probably would if it was really necessary, like if somehow DH or I absolutely couldn't get back or we were both also really sick and couldn't take care of LO. I wouldn't want them to, though, because I feel like they shouldn't risk getting sick when they're in their mid-60s and can avoid it. I'd feel terrible if they caught something.

Yes, they would call and let me know but wouldn't expect me to come back home (unless it was getting really bad and they felt we were needed.) My MIL stayed with the girls on Friday when they had the stomach flu (and then still stayed when I came home early from work with it too so I could throw up/sleep uninterrupted)

No, because my mom works, this usually happens with very little notice, and she has a hard time dealing with the kids when they're in healthy and in a good mood. I wouldn't do that to her or the kids. I wouldn't even ask my MIL because she's much older and scared of something happening to her while she's watching them.

The last time Hubs and I went out, a similar thing happened. Xander (3) threw up and was just plain miserable. My mom kind of was at a loss on what to do and called us. She didn't ask that we rush home, but I definitely felt bad leaving her with sick kids!

My parents are in their 50s and my mom doesn't have the best health. She took care of my sisters kids when they were sick, and my mom got sick herself, ended up in the hospital and it was quite serious . So I try not to have my kids around my parents when they're sick.

My mum definitely. My dad probably too, but he doesn't live close by. My in-laws no way, but they don't even babysit when lo's fine, but that's another story!
If my lo's still on the younger side and not able to express how he feels, id probably have gone to pick him up because I don't think I would have been able to enjoy an evening out while worrying!

I think my LO would probably be asking for me if he got sick so in that case my mom would probably text us and let us know the situation. She tends to be overly careful not to tell us what to do though so she would leave the final decision up to us, I think!

They would if we needed them to, but I'm not sure a date night counts as a need. I know if this happened with my parents they would be thinking that a sick kid should be at home in their own bed.

The more I think about it, the more I think it's kind of weird to just go about your date while your kid is sick and throwing up with your mom.

My parents have come down a few times to take care of B when he was sick and I couldn't take time off work. That being said I think if he got sick while they had him (like, they/I didn't realize he was sick) they would call me. But I don't think they would tell me to come pick him up (although I would, because I'm an overprotective worrier), they would just want to give me a heads up.

@ValentineMommy: Same. My mom would get knee deep in the trenches happily, but I would want to come home and be with him.

I also think there is some additional context needed - does your mom work full-time? I don't know how thrilled I'd be to risk getting sick for someone else's child... especially if the parents were just on a date night. Exposure could mean missing work and taking sick days. Plus a stomach bug is not my illness of choice.

I don't really know what my parents would do, but I'm with you. I wouldn't expect them, too. Honestly, sometimes I think people expect too much of grandparents. It's great if they can and want to help out, but I think it's also perfectly reasonable if they don't want to risk getting sick, just like any other babysitter.
