To update my experience (4 months postpartum) -from 3rd trimester on, a majority of my fingers were numb, but it lessened gradually until 2 months pp, all feeling came back just fine, but then my wrists were really painful when picking up the baby.

My OB said to just give it time and wear wrist braces, it is very common for new mothers. Now I'm just a bit sore first thing in the mornings when I pick him up. It is so much better and very manageable.

Definitely worth discussing with your doctor, but mine wasn't able to do much about it.

@pastemoo - Not to scare you but it definitely hurt to hold the baby, but I just fought through it. I learned real quick how to hold her so it's not as painful and tried my best to keep my wrist straight and in proper position. I was also on pain killers thr first two weeks recovering from c-section so that helped a bit. Can't wait to see your post when Baby Moo arrives!!!

@ElisaT: Good luck! I know, i hope it goes away soon! My OB actually warned me to have someone nearby the first few weeks because I might not be able to hold the baby. :(

@pastemoo - yea I'm going to give it time to heal and hopefully it'll come sooner rather than later. It's already much better than when I first had her but still a long way until normal movement and strength is back. Let me know how it goes after you get it treated! =)

@ElisaT: The surgery is very effective, but usually for those just pp, the docs recommend a year to recover before trying surgery.

@pastemoo - sorry to hear you are having wrist pains too! During pregnancy it was my left wrist and I thought it went away after I had LO. Well, turns out it was the pain killers talking! Yes the pain on my left wrist did go away but now my right wrist is even worst! I'm 3 months pp now and the pain has gone down slightly but I have to be very conscious of my limits or the pain is pretty bad. A friend of mine had wrist pains for half a year pp. I hope mine goes away soon. When ate you due?

I wear braces at night and it's pretty hideous, but they can't treat until after baby so it's a waiting game.

I'm dealing with this right now too. It started around 18 weeks, and now at 20 weeks is really disrupting my sleep and lingering for hours after I wake up. It's hard to get ready in the morning because just brushing my teeth makes my hand fall asleep. And driving to work this morning I kept having to switch hands and wiggle my fingers to get the feeling back.

I'm calling a hand specialist tomorrow to make an appointment. I need to sleep!!!

@ pastemoo - I wore it at night and while I worked at the computer for 3 weeks straight, which helped. I had been lazy about wearing it to sleep the past few days but need to start again.

@ msmini - I heard that swelling was a cause too so I am very conscious of my water intake to prevent swelling, but it's not really helping. Since I work at the computer, I'm also not sure if it happening during pregnancy was a coincidence and it may have nothing to do with it. I'm hoping it is pregnancy so at least I know it will go away. =\

I am 22 weeks, and I wake up the odd morning with tingling hands, it seems to be related to when I have too much sodium, or don't drink enough water (since pregnancy carpal tunnel is related to swelling it makes sense to me). I make an extra effort to watch my salt, drink lots of water, and I try to stretch out my hands/wrists before bed. I am really trying to keep it at bay, because if it became an all the time thing I would have to go off of work (I am an NICU nurse, so it just would be way too hard to work, and I couldn't work with braces on)

I have it and I'm only 9w2d - it's gonna be a long pregnancy but in the past I've gotten acupuncture for carpal tunnel and it has helped.

I haven't seen an orthopedic specialist but it sounds like the way to go. I was just wearing a wrist brace from Duane Reade and it restricts movement but that's about it.

@lemon drop - I agree that I'm pretty lucky this is the only real pain/inconvenience I've had during pregnancy. Only 3 more weeks until EDD!!!

Thanks everyone!

I didn't/haven't yet, but I work at an orthopaedics office--I recommend you make a doctor's appointment and get a well fitting brace (and maybe some occupational therapy or physical therapy).

I was having a similar pain shortly after DS2 was born, and spoke with my doctor about it. I honestly thought it was carpal tunnel, and was treating it as such, but I found out that it was something like tyrostenouis (sp?). I, ironically, got it from burping DS2 so much!

Yep. I still have wrist pain on and off and I'm 9 months pp. Wearing a brace helps and having someone do the heavy lifting for you helps too!

I did. Since I'd been diagnosed with carpal tunnel before I was pregnant, I had a special wrist brace already so I just wore that. Have you seen an orthopedic specialist? That's what I had to do.

Yes, since Thanksgiving both of my fingers on both hands have been numb pretty much all the time. It is worse when I sleep, eventually in the early morning I get so uncomfortable that I just have to get up. After I'm up for a while it isn't so bad, just numb fingers. I've tried wrist braces, but they don't do much for me.

I figure there could be a whole lot worse things to have than this, at least this is manageable.

A few weeks ago my left wrist started getting a bit sore, and within a few days it had gotten so bad that I had trouble doing anything that involved motion with my thumb. I've been wearing a wrist brace to help the pain since I work on the computer all day, but it hasn't gotten any better. I know some ladies mentioned carpal tunnel during pregnancy. Is anyone else experiencing this?
