Yep! It's so sad! My sister is an English professor and she's appalled at how many of her students fell through the cracks in jr high and high school.
She says it's a mix between education and parenting. She's found that a lot of kids with problems had parents doing their homework for them.

This makes hubs crazy. He's a recruiter and pretty much every resume that comes to him has to be edited heavily before going on the hiring manager.

I've hired dozens of editors over the years, and most of them don't know grammar very well. The ones that do are often sticklers who over-edit. It's tough to find a good balance!

I worry about it, too. I grew up in a really good public school system and good grammar was drilled into us. Poor grammar, spelling, and punctuation make me CRAZY. Either our kids will be in a good public school, or I will make sure they write correctly.

I work in HR and see this problem constantly! I also worry about the poor education and job training young adults today receive. It also makes me think about private schools for our future children. However, I also worry about a lack of diversity in the private schools in our smaller town.

@highwire: I'm like you. I had one professor my freshman year in college who didn't tolerate bad grammar. I learned so much in that quarter. I hated it at the time, but I'm so thankful. I'm not perfect with it, but much better than I used to be. Spelling is still difficult for me though. I always tested below average in spelling.

@highwire: I completely agree! sometimes i wonder how long they've been using the same resume, with the same horrible typos/grammatical mistakes in them, and how many times they've been rejected from getting an interview just because they haven't spell checked or had someone else look it over. for me, its a dealbreaker because a position in my group requires really good writing skills and attention to detail. typos and mistakes in a resume tell me they have neither! a little harsh, i know.

i actually went to a not-so-great public school, but i ended up being a pretty good writer anyway. i had to work hard at it though. i think sometimes if you just have that determination (and some level of aptitude is helpful, but not necessary), you don't necessarily have to go to a great school - and you'll turn out just fine :)

We are going through resumes at my office to find a new employee. I am shocked at the kind of resumes we are getting in. I haven't found one that is free of grammar, spelling, and punctuation mistakes.

I'm not a freak about this stuff. I understand accidents happen. But shouldn't your resume be formatted correctly and have perfect spelling?

This is all snowballing into worrying about the education system and how it seems to have failed all of these people. I had ONE professor in college who wouldn't tolerate a poorly written paper. I am so happy to have wound up in a couple of his classes. If I hadn't, I'd probably be in similar shoes as everyone else; a college degree in my hands and no writing skills.

This is making me want to send my kids to private school or somewhere I can guarantee that they are getting a quality education. I grew up in an excellent public school system, so thankfully I had that.

In closing, my apologies for any spelling or grammar mistakes in this post. I'm in a hurry! Ha.
