My baby was complete breech. My dr's policy was breech baby=c-section. If we hadn't had one, it would have ended badly for both of us. She was so big and I'm so short, there was no way she was come vsginally. I didn't attempt to turn her because I felt her flip head down and then she flipped back. I had the mindset that she flipped for a reason and I wasn't missing with that.

@MoonMoon: @Arden: I'm not sure where you guys are seeing something that indicates a vaginal birth is less risky for the baby... Here's a few quotes from the article:

"Vaginal breech births overall are more dangerous for babies than caesarean sections. Studies in recent years, however, have shown that a vaginal delivery can be safe under certain circumstances..." <-- CAN be safe - not SAFER

"...cited studies that showed breech birth under certain protocols is no riskier than a planned C-section." <-- this doesn't mean it's less risky than a c-section, just equal to

"A well-publicized study in 2000 initially found C-sections to be safer than vaginal deliveries for breech babies..."

As far as I can tell, a vaginal birth is safer for the MOTHER, but NOT the baby.

I did not have a breech baby, but I did deliver abroad and I am really curious what the OB at the hospital and the midwives would have suggested. I can not handle stressful situations very well and I know that I would have increased stress if I tried to deliver vaginally, had complications and then needed an emergency c-section, as opposed to a scheduled c-section from the get go.

I had a breech baby and she was frank breech but in a strange position - more of like a pike sitting position. Anyway, in Canada I think they're more inclined to attempt to deliver a baby breech, but they recommend against it in terms of fetal safety. When they confirmed breech before the delivery (although we knew she was breech from 33 weeks and had an unsuccessful ECV) they gave us the choice but said it wasn't the recommended course of treatment. My water had broken close to 12 hours prior, I had had 0 contractions, and that baby was wedged into the same position she had been in for at least 6 weeks, so I was basically shouted "are you crazy!? let's do this c-section". there's no doubt in my mind we would both have died without modern medicine. If I had another breech baby I would do the same thing again.

I mentioned this article to my mom, who's a postpartum nurse, and she said, "Umm, if your baby is breech, you're having a c-section, no question." So I guess that's that. :silly:

I would defer to my doctor or midwife on this. It seems that a breech vaginal delivery, *with and experienced provider* is as safe as a c-section. However in the US, I think it would be hard to find a sufficiently experienced dr. So unless my provider felt I was an ideal candidate for it I would go for a c section. I definitely wouldn't want to labor a long time and end up with a c section anyway.

I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with it.

I will say, however, that my mother was joking with my L&D nurse about how she'd likely be an automatic c-section now--her first pregnancy was twins, with Twin B being a footling breech. She said she delivered the Twin A (48 hour back labor, no meds!) and then the OB reached up and pulled the second one down by his foot!

@NorCalWayfarer: Yes, this! Except in our case the cord was way too short. It scares me that our labor could have been very complicated (especially since he was born at 35 weeks) if we had attempted a vaginal birth.

I fully support any woman who wants to take the risk, but for me, if I have another breech baby, I will be opting for a C-section.

I would opt for a c-section. Like @tinyperson, my friend's baby was breach and after they delivered him they realized he wasn't turning because he had the cord wrapped around his neck and couldn't be head down. My friend was really relieved they opted for the c-section.

@MoonMoon: Yes. It seems people think that a c-section is less risky, when the quote published above from a clinical study suggests the exact opposite. While c-sections absolutely have their place (including in some breech births) the idea that a c-section is always the less risky option is fundamentally untrue.

The article did not convince me to have a vaginal birth over c-section for a breech baby.

In fact after reading it, it made me more firm on the idea to have a c-section if my baby was breech. I would rather not risk my babies life over something that modern medicine has come up with to ensure me a safe delivery for my baby.

It seems like a lot of people assume that attempting to vaginally deliver a breech baby is harmful to the baby when it seems that the article cited says the opposite? It's a tough decision in any case. If I were having a baby, it would be my second after an issue-free vaginal delivery of my first, so I might be a good candidate to at least attempt it.

I do want to add for those who are interested, this quote from an article published in the journal Clinical Obstetrics and Gynecology by C.P. Weiner, who reviewed the information on breech deliveries.

"Routine cesarean delivery of the near-term or term breech fetus increases maternal morbidity, maternal mortality, and the cost to society, but it does not provide a foreseeable benefit to the near-term and term breech fetus....Although preached with great emotion, the recommendation for routine elective cesarean section to deliver the near-term or term breech fetus cannot be substantiated by studies published over the last decade."

I actually did attempt a breech delivery, but my induction didn't work (I was only 36 weeks and had to deliver that week because they shared a placenta), so I ended up with a c-section. My doctor provided me with several medical journals discussing breech delivery. He had also delivered breech babies multiple times. Depending on the type of breech (I wouldn't do footling breech), I would have no issue trying again.

Based on the positive medical evidence I've seen, I would try for a vaginal delivery if the baby was in the "best" breech position. I imagine I would probably deliver in the operating room though (not sure how most hospitals handle that) just in case.

I think this is an issue I'd defer to my doctor on. If she felt that a breech vaginal delivery was less risky, then I'd be included to try. But I highly doubt she does! Hoping I don't have to find out :)

Also, there was a great episode of Call the Midwife that shows a breech birth.
