L goes through phases where she does that and it's SO frustrating! Truly the low point in BFing for me. For the most part, I quit feeding her when she starts popping off and screaming, and try again later.

Baby A is 4.5 months and doing the exact same thing. She'll pop off and turn her head to look at whatever else is going on in the room (usually nothing) and come back. Driving me crazy. At least she doesn't ususally do it during the bedtime nurse. Silver lining.

@ladyfingers, I could have written this exact post. DS (almost 9m) has been doing this for the past month or so. I attributed it to distraction originally but since he still does it when we are in a quiet room alone I don't think that is the case.

He'll pull off the boob and just GRIN at me, and I'm all "You're super cute, but it's time to FOCUS!" Last time he did it, I ended up putting a burp cloth over his head so he couldn't look at me. That seemed to keep him focused on the boob for a while, haha.

Have you tried switch nursing LO when he's fooling around? Sometimes that can help remind them to get down to business! Failing that, I used to give Miss A three chances then put the boob away for twenty minutes :-) thankfully the latch on - latch off is usually just a phase!

@JerricaBenton: @ladyfingers: You both may want to try a "nursing necklace" they keep the attention at the breast. They make them specifically for these reasons, but any beaded necklace should do the trick. Or you can buy a cute nursing one on etsy :) This has helped with the pinching that started at 8 months :/

LO is a few weeks behind yours and she has been doing this lately. It's super aggravating but I chalk it up to being distracted. It hurts so much when she tugs away and now she's even biting (gumming obvs but it feels so sharp!) I've been giving her a soft blankie or lovey and she'll rub it on her face with her free hand and sometimes that helps.

I was going to ask "Is he about 4 months old?", then I saw your last sentence. It's a very common age for babies to start "playing" at the breast. They are learning cause and effect and unfortunately lots of breast fed babies start popping on and off, clamping, and turning their heads while nursing, at this age. It can be frustrating but it's perfectly normal.

@sera_87: Well, the only time I nurse him during the week are when he first wakes up, and when we get home from daycare. When we get home, it's been about 3 hours since his bottle, and he goes 3 hours between all his bottles (they feed on cue), so the timing would seem to work out. And I can't really delay that evening nursing session without pushing his bedtime too far back.

I do also nurse him when he wakes at night, but his first waking is typically 5 or so hours after he went to bed. And then his second one is 2-3 hours after that.

I did try feeding him after his bath rather than before earlier in the week, thinking that same thing, that maybe he would nurse longer/be more attentive if more time had passed. And all that ended up happening was he was a screaming, hungry, tired mess by the time I had bathed him and got his jammies on... and he still didn't nurse well.

My kidlet does that all the time. I just end the nursing session and offer again later (usually within the hour). Maybe hes telling you that you can start lengthing the time between feedings?

If he's truly, truly hungry and/or needing comfort, he will nurse.

This is getting really aggravating. For the past couple of weeks, LO has been doing this baffling thing while nursing. The longest he'll stay latched is a couple of minutes, during which he'll be actively drinking, and then he'll pop off and try to get back on. As soon as he gets back on he pops off again. Repeat over and over and over again.

There doesn't really seem to be any pattern as to why or when he does this. Sometimes it devolves into screaming, sometimes he just smiles and keeps doing it over and over. At first I worried my letdown was too slow for him now that he's getting bottles at daycare, or my supply was tanking, but often when he pops off, there's milk coming down my boob or getting all over his face. Which makes it even more frustrating. Sometimes it's in the evening when he hasn't napped since noon (he's a terrible napper at daycare) and other times it's first thing in the morning, so it's not even only when he's tired.

He's still got some residual stuff from the RSV he had a few weeks ago, and sometimes he's stuffy, so I'll suck his nose out, but even once he's not stuffed up, he'll still do this. He takes his pacifier just fine, so I don't think he's teething or has an ear infection -- in other words, anything that would cause him pain while sucking. He doesn't seem distracted, because he's not pulling off to look around at stuff, unless you count me, so maybe he's distracted by me? I've also tried different positions and nothing really works to fix it.

So basically I just shove him back on a ton of times hoping he'll get enough from a suck or two, and then I give up, not really knowing when he's had enough, because he will constantly try to get back on, but usually doesn't cry if I just stop offering altogether.

He's 4 months, could this be part of that whole weird period? Has anybody else experienced this? It's a real bummer and it's stressing me out, not knowing if he's ever getting enough from me.
