We used a cosleeper until 6 months and then transitioned to the nursery and stayed downstairs. So the baby was only an arm's reach away for the bigger regression. Since then its been OK... you don't notice the stairs that much in the middle of the night once you're standing you're standing if you know what I mean. At first it was really annoying going up and down the stairs several times a night, but we got used to it. Ours house is really big so it's hard to hear her without the monitor so we make sure that's always set up next to us. We are downstairs in the master bedroom and LO is upstairs. It worked out fine for us, even during the crazy sleep regressions. We slept on the floor in his room for a few days during the 18 month regression, but it wasn't a huge deal. When our next LO is born in October, s/he will be in a downstairs bedroom, but across the house.
