@MamaJ: @silver1: haha, thanks!!

@silver1: Interesting idea. I hadn't thought of that. I'm not sure how that would go! Although it might be too much of a pain to move his crib down there!

@OpinionsLikeKittens: Thanks for sharing your experience! I might see about keeping baby #2 in our room a little longer just to get past the first regression and then move him/her to his/her own room, but who knows. And I'll definitely have a monitor so that I can hear everything!

@Dandelion: Does DS and M share a room or just sleep near each other? Xander seems like SUCH a light sleeper sometimes, so I'm definitely nervous about this! I think regardless of where I put the new baby, he/she might wake up Xander!!

Fwiw...and I know ds is 6, but he never hears M crying at night. Slepps right through it all.

I think having both kids upstairs would be fine. Like pp said, you could put a bed in #2's room for rough nights.

We have the same set up with the baby upstairs and us downstairs. We used a cosleeper until 6 months and then transitioned to the nursery and stayed downstairs. So the baby was only an arm's reach away for the bigger regression. Since then its been OK... you don't notice the stairs that much in the middle of the night once you're standing you're standing if you know what I mean. Peace of mind wise I would like to be closer but our house has good acoustics we still can hear the pacifier fall.

@kiddosc: @Foodnerd81: There is a futon in the office, which is also upstairs, so that's always a possibility! Or if I put the new baby in the guest room, it's big enough to keep the bed there, so that's a possibility too.

@lawbee11: @bushelandapeck: @pinkcupcake: Thanks for sharing your experiences! Sounds like it's not a huge deal to have to go up and down the stairs in the middle of the night. And hopefully we'll get lucky and baby #2 will be as good of a sleeper as Xander!

@Mrs. Blue: Yes! I'm pregnant with baby #2!!! Knock on wood that it sticks! :D

@Smurfette: Ugh, good point. I never lost the baby weight from Xander, so I really should go up and down the stairs!

I'd put the kids upstairs and us downstairs. While we don't have this situation, I exclusively pumped. So no matter what, I had to go downstairs to get his bottle ready, then come back upstairs to feed it to him. I got very used to it!

I'd probably put baby #2 upstairs in the same room as baby #1 and sleep in the guest room if necessary when baby hits sleep regressions. If you are certain you want them each in their own room, then the guest room isn't an option, but it's probably still worth it to have baby #2 in his room upstairs and just climb the stairs when required!

We moved into a house where the master is on the first floor and all the bedrooms are on the second level. At first it was really annoying going up and down the stairs several times a night, but we got used to it. Ours house is really big so it's hard to hear her without the monitor so we make sure that's always set up next to us. If we have another baby, we would have them share our room for the first few months and then give him/her their own bedroom upstairs.

That's the set up for us right now as well. We are downstairs in the master bedroom and LO is upstairs. It worked out fine for us, even during the crazy sleep regressions. We slept on the floor in his room for a few days during the 18 month regression, but it wasn't a huge deal. When our next LO is born in October, s/he will be in a downstairs bedroom, but across the house. It's going to be tricky to have the two LO's in totally different parts of the house.
