@pastemoo: I think it's a lovely idea. I recently threw a tea party sprinkle for a good friend, expecting her second. She also didn't want people to feel obligated to gift, so I worded the invite like this:

"A baby is brewing
which got me stewing
that ____ would love a day spent with good friends.
Tasty treats we will nibble, porcelain cups we will lift;
your mere presence will be a most precious gift!"

Of course, people still brought presents (which you should probably expect, too), but they were small things for her like a nice pair of pajamas, healing bath salts, mothers milk tea, etc. It was low key and really fun!

A good friend of mine did a tea with sandwiches and cake at a tea room. It was small and intimate. And not much work since it was "outsourced"!

Can you find someone to come to your house and give gel manicures? Thatmight be more cost effective than going to a spa.

I have a machine, costs $40, polish is another $30 for top, base and color.....

@pastemoo: and gender totally changes the gift of clothes option! ;) I recall you also love vintage tea cups so a tea and cake gathering would be very you. :)

@regberadaisy: I still have a good stash! Great memory!
Not that I'd even turn down more, haha.
MIL said she would get the cake. And cleaning up after tea isn't much work--I hope!
@Chillybear: Ooh, really great point, thanks! My guess is 3 family ladies, me, and 3 or 4 friends? So less than 10, but definitely a limitation depending on which spa.
@honeybear: I really like tea.
I can always ask MIL to come up with a good "title" for the party. :)
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: All I want is a fun day with friends. I'm in school and most of my local friends are, too, so we don't do much pampering... I think it would be much needed for all of us.
@gingerbebe: Good point. :)

I would say as a second time mama, no gifts are necessary but if you are so inclined, children always need books. It gives someone who really wants to give a gift the opportunity to give something they feel good about, as opposed to something like wipes.

The spa or tea & cake idea sounds lovely. If you go the spa route will your friends each pay for their own services? If so that may cut down on gifts without you saying something.

"No gifts please, your presence is your present"

"In lieu of a card pr gift please bring a children's book."

Also depending on the invite you choose and how you pitch the event you may just get a fun day with your friends instead of a "shower/sprinkle."

I think it's fine to have a party, but if you don't want gifts, I would not call it a sprinkle. A "tea to celebrate the coming baby" is fine. I guess since a "tea honoring baby and mom" (or something similar) is a little ambiguous, I'd be okay with something like "No gifts, please" at the bottom. I like the tea idea. :)

I've only had a shower for my first baby, but i do believe that each baby deserves to be celebrated. one thing that i thought of reading your post is not to label it as a shower or sprinkle. (because they imply "showering the guest of honor with gifts).

How many people are you looking to include? If its only a small number a pedi party would be a great idea. I know we did this for a few wedding parties I was in. If you have a nail place you like and can handle the amount of people you are thinking. Call them and see if they would be will to have you and since you're bringing in a crowd ask for a discounted rate.

For my wedding we chose a nail salon in a strip mall but it was one big open room with 6 pedi stations, We brought in treats and champagne mimosas. Another friend did this at a spa and the pedi/nail room was so small we each went back one at a time with the tech which was not as much fun and took forever.

@pastemoo: I like the tea and cake idea as long as you don't have to prep and clean up!

Are you planning on CDing this time and if so do you still have your stash? If not, maybe it can be a cloth diaper party?

My friend is helping me plan a baby sprinkle (for myself). I didn't do a big shower with my son (my work took me out for brunch and brought me really nice stuff), but I want to do something special.
I don't need "stuff" though.

Is this a good set of things to do:
1.mani/pedi out at a spa (friend is looking for groupons)
2.tea and cake at home
3.coloring a baby t-shirt or onesie

As for the gift situation:
How can I say "I have what I need, I just want your company"
Or "if you really want to bring something, a pack of wipes is plenty"
or "in lieu of gift, please bring an index card with a short inspirational quote or mantra that helps you during a tough workout or hard time in your day"
or something along those lines.
I know people don't like coming empty handed but I want people to be able to come without a gift.

Is it reasonable to have this party at all?
Are the events suitable for a second baby?
How would you word the invite with regards to gifts?
