@Vegmama: Hope she finds something that works for her! I kind of hesitated to suggest the room change since if she's not wanting to CIO it can be a bit tougher to accomplish (although like I said, the crib soother helped us a lot,) but I hope she finds something that works for her!

Thank you for the feedback. I'm going to send my friend the link to this thread so she can look through it.

I'm surprised to see so many people suggesting moving the baby from their room. I never thought about it.

We co-sleep (we don't bed share unless she's fussy around 5:00 in the morning), but lately, she's been waking us up, and we've been waking her up (from moving around). I'm not quite ready for her to be out of our room ... I love the closeness, but we've started talking about it.

I'm not sure if that's an option for my friend either, but all of these suggestions are wonderful.

Oh, and for the posters who asked about illness or teething ... From what I've gathered, her baby has been going through frequent wakings since the beginning. Poor little one!!

Thank you again ... Let's all cross our fingers that she finds a solution and some glorious sleep soon!

My friend's son has never STTN, even after a year old. He does sleep in his own room and has a strict, early bedtime, so he sleeps for good stretches and is a very happy baby otherwise, but he wakes several times a night and needs to be nursed to go back to sleep. My friend figures its because breastfed babies need to eat more often and he flat refuses formula, so she doesn't really have a choice. Maybe her baby just needs the calories?

My son didn't STTN until he was 14 months old, and it was brutal for us. He nursed every time he woke up during the night, and I mean really nursed. He was in his own room, and I tried only nursing in the rocking chair and then putting him back to bed and then I tried co-sleeping, but I didn't get any sleep that way (and he still woke to nurse).

http://sleeplady.com/books/ was just recommended to me by a friend's co-worker as having been a miracle for them. It even has sleep solutions for toddlers. I am totally unwilling to do CIO, so I'm hoping this book has good options if our future LOs aren't good sleepers.

We night weaned at 7 months which I know is pretty early, but I was certain that LO was getting enough calories during the day and I was going mad with sleep deprivation. After I stopped feeding at night it took a few more weeks of many night wakings and then he suddenly stopped and started pretty much sttn. Recently he's had some issues with night-time crawling practice, but cutting out night feeds made such a difference to his sleep.

Maybe your friend could look at cutting out a few feeds, setting a time not to feed before and trying to use other ways to get baby back to sleep before then? I would just rock him and stroke his back in his cot til he fell back to sleep - it was exhausting and feeding would have been SO much easier but it was worth it in the end and I didn't have to let him cry.

I know many people aren't comfortable with co-sleeping, but my LO has always had an incredibly difficult time sleeping and has always woken every hour to two hours (literally, he is now 16 months and still wakes a lot). I've done partial co-sleeping (meaning for part of the night) his entire life and finally giving in to co-sleeping is what saved me. I was going crazy constantly stressing about what to do about his sleep troubles and I finally just accepted that co-sleeping is what will work best for him for now. Of course this isn't to say that co-sleeping completely fixed all of the sleep problems, but it allowed me to get rest! Again, I totally understand if someone isn't comfortable co-sleeping, but maybe they are open to it if they don't want to go the CIO route. Lots of good luck to them!

I have to agree with the previous people who mentioned moving to his own room. Our LO is almost 10 months and we just gave in and actually moved ourselves out of our master bedroom we shared with his crib (we have a 1 bedroom loft) currently we crammed our bed into the open office space off our living room. It totally worked. Our previous terrible sleeper has slept great all week AND he's even pushing teeth through at the same time. It made a huge difference. :)

I would try moving the baby to his own room. He could be waking up because he's distracted by mom and dad in the room. Do they use a sound machine? Also, because he's breastfed, he could be smelling mom's milk and wanting to nurse. When he wakes up, is he wanting to nurse or just play?

The book that @mrsjazz recommended is a good one. My recommendation is also to stick it out with one type of training method for at least 1 week, don't try to change it up every day!

@catomd00: I agree. If my LO wakes up a tiny bit in his own room, he goes right back to sleep (although at that age having an aquarium-style soother in his crib worked wonders to help.) If he wakes up a tiny bit and sees us in the same room as him, all bets are off and he wails and whines until we pick him up.

She could try this:
http://www.amazon.com/The-No-Cry-Sleep-Solution-Through/dp/0071381392/

Our LO went through this. We got her to sleep through the night but then at some point she stopped and kept waking. Moving her out of our room and CIO were not options we wanted to explore at the time so we used some of the methods in this book and it helped. It took a while, so patience is key!

I agree w/ Beaker about having Dad get up. We had to sleep train (CIO) w/ our first around that time because her sleep was getting worse. It only took 15 min of crying for 2 nights in a row. I know it's harder if the baby is in the same room though.

I think if CIO isn't an option, they'd have to explore some of the gentler methods, but 7 months may be too old for pick up/put down, not sure.

I would try moving baby to another room , maybe. Or cosleeping. I know those are complete opposites, but I feel like different things work for different babies.

Also, my baby didn't Sttn even once in her life till she was 11.5 months old and still on,y does it sometimes....I think the key for us was a combination of her eating more during the day, cutting our night feelings, and then CIO.

Asking for a friend. A friend of mine has a 7 month old that has never been a great sleeper. Baby wakes every couple of hours through the night.

She is breastfeeding. Baby sleeps in it's own bed in their room. Cry it out isn't an option for them. As far as I know, baby doesn't have silent reflux or a physical issue causing the wake ups.

Any little things (or resources) I could send her?

We just went through gentle sleep training with our baby, and it worked, but staying asleep was never her issue, and I'm not sure I have the tools to share.
