For me it would depend on what has been repaired/what work it needs currently and whether that will likely keep the car going for years longer. If you can make one more expensive repair and drive it for a few more years with only minor maintenance needed, that's not a bad deal compared to a regular car payment. DH drives an old 1990s SUV to work (very short commute, though) and I drive a much newer car. Just about everything has been replaced on his ride and it runs well so our plan is to keep that going and put off buying a newer one for as long as possible. BUT I stay at home and if his were to suddenly crap out we could make it work on 1 until we got another car purchased. That wouldn't be an option for everyone!

@NCSUchick27: If you're putting more money into repairs in a year than the car is worth, it's time to get a new car

We just went through this too, except more so because while we didn't have problems NOW with my 2004 Nissan Xterra, we were worried we would start. With our first child on the way, we decided to get something that is newere/safer and hopefully more reliable in the long run. It was a hard choice, I loved my Xterra but I was afraid that within a year it would start falling apart and become a money pit. We got a Chevy Equinox.

We just put $2k into our 200,000 mile 2003 accord. We can also afford a new car but it made more sense to us to keep this one going. Our other car also has 200,000 and we plan to replace it first.

I think the car is worth around $3,000. I am thinking we should just get rid of it, but DH isn't convinced yet.

How much is your car even worth? I gave up on my first car when the transmission went out because it would have cost more to fix it than the car was worth.

I used the money I would have had to spend for the repair as a down payment.

my theory is a new/er car is a predictable payment every month therefore you can budget for that expense. You can also choose something with or extend the warranty so that most repairs are covered.

With a car that keeps needing repairs you never know when the will crop up. not only is a money and budget unpredictablity but its also a convenience and safety issue.

For like 2 months in the spring my car kept over heating, always in the afternoon right after i picked LO up at daycare. I would have to pull over or pray that i made it back to my office and wait for the tow truck and my husband, remove the car seat, go to the dealer (still under warranty) get a lender from them if they had one, deal with that POS until my car was ready. After the 3rd time i was seriously ready to trade it in.

I would buy another car.
We're getting close to having to make that decision. Husband has a car that has 100k+ miles, he uses it for work and it's needed some repairs lately. We're going to consider trading it in for a certified pre-owned with less miles and a good warranty and see how low we can get the payment. (All the others we've bought new, so I'm curious)

@NCSUchick27: we had the same situation as you. DH had a 2006 impreza with over 200,000 miles that was starting to rust. We traded it in and bought a 2015!

We fixed the car (1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport) until it got totaled. The most major repair was $700, but if we'd had a bunch like that in a row, we probably would have gotten a new car.

We had almost the exact same situation as you. A 2000 Subaru, needed similar costing repairs, had just done repairs a few months earlier. Had one car payment already, but decided a second car payment would be easier to manage than a money pit!

DH's 2002 Subaru needs at least $2,000 in repairs. It has over 160k miles on it. We just spent $1,800 in repairs on it earlier this year to fix another issue. I am afraid that if we fix this problem something else is going to need to be fixed in a few months. When do you stop throwing money into an older car?

We just purchased a new car earlier this year so we already have one car payment. We can easily afford another one, but are hesitant about taking out another car loan.

Would you fix the car or buy a new/used car?
