I'd just do it now if you can somehow swing it. Any work done after you've moved in, lived there, have kids, etc is prob a nightmare!

@LulaBee: yeah 42 year old carpet is pretty grody I bet! The carpet in the house isn't horrible, it's just not our style at all. But I think we've decided it will be less painful to have to redo it while living in the house than it would be to pay for it right now. Luckily we have the space to move furniture around pretty easily while working on the rooms and extra space for the kids to sleep while their rooms are done. But maybe we will massively regret this in a year or two.

I'll be interested to hear how it goes wth the stairs, and how hard that is. The carpet on the stairs and landing is new, we just don't like it. So for me I figure we just wait since it's not nasty. Trying to talk shows out of trying to do the stairs himself.

The house we just bought had original carpet upstairs and on stairs (42 years old!). We splurged and did hardwoods upstairs before we moved in, figuring it would be easier without furniture/family in the house.

The nasty carpet is still on the stairs, but my FIL is going to put hardwoods on stairs, and we bought a runner so the kids are less likely to slip and fall. He hasn't started on them yet, and the carpet grosses me out.

I'd get new carpet in bedrooms ASAP (preferably hired but DIY shouldn't be that hard since it is all flat). I'd wait on the stairs because 1) it's newer and 2) in a few years when you're toddlers are older maybe you could afford to do hardwood on them.

If you have the budget, I would redo it all before you move in. I think this could also help with buying new furniture since you can keep your floor color in mind. And for me personally, I would have a very hard time living with carpets since I've had hardwood for my entire adult life.

I happen to be very thrifty and like to do DIY. But when I finally put hardwood down I had a professional do the job. I did a lot of research and found the best quality and price I was amazed at the difference in price between the company I looked at not only for the product but the installation. and be careful and make sure what is covered in the installation price. you do have to move everything and I wished I had done it sooner I love my wood floors.

We kept the old carpet. It looks even worse than when we moved in. LO is 5 and we are SO done with this carpet. Can't wait to get hardwood within the year. Based on this thread, I think I'll ask about doing it room by room.

@Truth Bombs: I am so with you on hiring someone. Plus it will take them days to do the whole thing just right as opposed to DH learning on the job, so to speak. We have the space to move furniture as needed at least. I said he can start in the room that would be a playroom at some point. It's a rectangle and we don't need it right now so if he screws up we can wait to fix it.

@Foodnerd81: I would do the bedroom one by one over time. Moving furniture out of one bedroom to get it done really isn't a big deal. But I would hire a professional. My husband's uncle owns a flooring company and my hubs worked for him in the summers. It's hard work. Plus, I'm at a point in my life where I can afford to hire things out and I would rather pay a professional than solo parent for a full weekend so my husband can DIY.

Bleh. With move in times and trying to rent our current condo out, it's just not feasible to rip it up and replace before moving in. It really bugs me that they put in new carpet that we dislike. It's more of a question of first year vs 5 years. Ah well.

We had a very similar situation except only the stairs and 2 bedrooms had carpet and the remaining floor upstairs is the ugliest laminate on the face of the earth. We replaced the carpet in just 1 room because it was really really bad. We bought a remnant piece and Dh installed it so it was pretty inexpensive. Our long term plan is to replace everything with hard wood when the kids are older and less likely to fall down the stairs. Better to do it all at once than risk something annoying happen by replacing a little at a time.

If you can afford it, definitely take it all out before moving in so you don't need to deal with it after all your furniture is already in there. When we moved into our house, it was half hardwood, half carpeting (all new, but very cheap and not our style), and we couldn't afford to replace it with hardwood, but I wish we could have. It's been 4 years and the carpets look kind of gross (between cats and baby/toddler, they have taken a beating). We will definitely have to replace them before we sell, and I can't imagine moving all our furniture out and then back in again to do it.

If possible I would rip it all up and put in hardwood before moving in. Our current house is all hardwood (except the stairs and the upstairs hallway) and I love it. I have a 3 year old and a 1 year old and having hardwood has not impeded them in anyway (crawling, walking, etc). I just think it's so much cleaner!

Our house is only carpeted in bedrooms. We had it ripped out before we moved in so we didn't have to deal with moving things multiple times.

We didn't recapped one room because it looked like the room had hardwoods... I wish we'd assumed it was carpeted for a reason. The parque is in awful shape

We knew we had hardwoods underneath and had this issue. We lived in the basement during renovations. We had the majority of the furniture in the garage and paid the moving company to come back in and move it upstairs. A pro stained and finished it- I think it took 3 weeks. I vote have it done by a pro. If you can swing it before do it, if you need to save, wait.

I hate hate hate the carpet in our house. The house is a mix of berber carpet (living room, play room, bedrooms) and hardwood (kitchen, office, dining room, stairs and hallway). Our dog loves to grab at the loops in the carpet and destroy it. And the house isn't very old, but the carpet is all mashed down in places. Ugh. Anyways, I would replace when I could do it all at once so that it would be consistent.

As for spilling, we don't let DS on the carpet with anything other than water. I spill more than he does anyways, lol.

It will be far easier to rip out the carpet and put in hardwood while the house is empty. We are currently saving up for laminate in our main areas, and I wish we had just done it before moving in.

You bought a new house ,with a lot of carpeting (staircase, upstairs landing, hall, and bedrooms). The carpet on the stairs and landing is brand new, bedrooms have older carpet. None of it is your style.

How long would you live with it as is? Or rip it up and put in hardwood? Little by little or all at once? Assume there is not hardwood underneath.

I'm leaning towards just live with it and save up for a few years and do it all at once, preferably with a professional doing the work. DH wants it gone as soon as reasonably possible but wants to do most of the work himself. I feel like it will be a years long thing his way!

I also don't really like carpeted stairs but can't deny they will be nice with small children who stumble and slip.
