People have different standards of care (regarding your coworker). I have a friend who send both of her kids to an in home that was super happy with it, but would tell me stories that were all red flags/unacceptable to me. Like....the lady always put her kids to nap on the couch. They didn't have pack n plays or cots or nap mats or anything. And the daughter started there at 1. So that seemed unsafe to me. The kids watched a TON of cartoons and movies (again, starting at 1). And my friend was responsible for packing their lunch and snacks, but if she was ever late picking them up because of traffic or whatever, the daycare lady would go ahead and give them "dinner", but it would be stuff like a glass of grape soda with mac n cheese, and cake and cookies for snacks. And again, starting at age 1. And my friend was framing all this in a way that told me she loved it---like isn't it so great that she'll give them dinner when I'm running late? And isn't so great that she isn't rigid about nap times?</p> <p>And inside I was like........ahhhh.....no, none of that would be great to me. Turns out my co-worker has been going there for a long time and is just more comfortable with her judgement calls than I am (his child is also older which may make a difference) and is more familiar with her family (her older children help run the daycare during the summer).</p> <p>She is not licensed in this state and mostly runs based on word-of-mouth through her family and neighborhood. Since we are one of the first folks who didn't know her beforehand, I'll tell her what we found unacceptable, inform my co-worker and just consider this an unfortunate learning experience.</p> <p>Fortunately, within a day of asking around, my awesome neighbor and mom friend is willing to watch DS with her daughter while we work something else out long term. I'd arrange for something in the interim (beg family, ask a SAH mom friend to pinch hit for me for a few weeks, something) and just find a nanny that will watch LO 1 now and knows that Lo2 is on the way. </p> <p>Another benefit is that LO1 will have a lot of change when LO2 is born. To also throw a new childcare provider in the mix could be a lot. When we were considering home daycare we always asked who else would ever be in the home if they didn't bring it up first. So, this would be a giant red flag and I never would send my kid back if an unauthorized person was in the home.</p> <p>I hate to be blunt, but as a person that also hates conflict, there's no room for making assumptions and shying away from asking questions when it comes to your child and their safety. There's clearly a reason she's absurdly cheap.</p> <p>Strange man aside, sleeping on the job is beyond unacceptable and I would not send my child back after that either.
