@blackbird: this! Be prepared for a not so great night of sleep, be forgiving. Babe will get overstimulated. When we have something to go to we do try for a third nap, by lying and nursing or going for a walk, but it didn't happen is weekend and she was fine. We got home an hour after bedtime. She was tired and went right to sleep! All the people and excitement kept her up and entertained until then.

Meh, I'm pretty obsessed with not messing with my daughter's sleep, but over the holidays you really just need to go with the flow. I'd probably see if he'll nap in the car on the way there. If not, then just wing it. It's just one day.

What kind of restaurant is it? If it's a fairly casual place with some space to spare you can try putting him in his stroller with the shade up or a blanket over him. We've had luck getting DD to sleep that way in restaurants. We just kind of roll her back and forth with one hand while we're still sitting at the table.

Last year LO was 9 months at Christmas. Christmas Eve dinner interfered with her bedtime. We winged it and it worked out great.

We tried to get her to nap as much as possible that day (putting her down as soon as she showed the slightest sleep cues and not over scheduling the day). We changed her into her pjs when she was getting sleepy and left when it was clear she was hitting her wall. She stayed up an hour and a half past her bedtime, slept in the car on the way home, and hardly blinked when we transferred her to her crib.

We obviously skipped her bedtime routine and skipped bath time and it was fine. Of course our plan all along was to bolt as soon as she was fussy/ready for bed. We were just shocked she stayed up so late and had fun doing it.

I'd roll with it - that's what happens at the holidays! Last year DS was 5 mos and slept in my arms during xmas eve dinner, woke up for awhile, and totally passed out in his pj's on the way home.

Go and see how it goes. There might be enough excitement around that he will be entertained and happy. When we are out late I skip bedtime routine and just put his pajamas on and put him to bed.

Christmas Eve we will be out late too but we will be at my inlaws. I plan to change him in to his pajamas before we head home and just put him straight to bed.

I would go, it's a holiday and yes I understand that it ruins the routine, but in this case being with family would be more important to me. I would push back afternoon nap or try to get a 3rd late afternoon nap in to hopefully tie her over & I would think of investing in a stroller so if LO wants to nap you have a place to put him/her down.

I agree with @blackbird as well. Try for a third nap, but if it doesn't happen, just go and see how well LO does. If he meltdowns, people will understand if you leave.

I would just go with it, since it's a special occasion and holiday. Granted, our 5 month old daughter's bedtime is pretty flexible, and she is okay passing out, anytime, anywhere, so my opinion may be bias. If an additional nap during the day ends up being an option, I'd try that, too.

Like PP said, I would just go with it and see how LO does. I would probably try to squeeze in some later day sleep, either a nap or in the car, and then just do bedtime at home. He might sleep at the restaurant regardless. My 6.5 month old is less content to sleep in the carrier at restaurants than she used to be, but she will still do it from time to time.

I agree with @blackbird - just wing it. I would put LO in pajamas, get to the restaurant on time and give LO a comfy chair where sleep is possible but not mandatory. Be prepared to leave early if LO fusses too much, but hope that you can at least get through dinner without too much screaming.

We are going to wing it on Christmas Eve as well. We will be at my parents house so that will make it easier but with 40+ people in the house, I don't think she is going to go down to bed very easily...

I think it depends on how your LO reacts to being tired and around other people. As PP said, he may be entertained with all the people around and be okay, then pass out on the car ride home.

I think it depends how your LO handles change and noise. For mine, I would try the 3rd nap or get him to sleep some in the car so he won't be totally tired come dinner. Mine would also be totally entertained by the other kids and noise so that would actually help.

Wing it. If LO loses it at dinner, prepare to leave early. Otherwise, hope that he/she is stimulated and excited by dinner and seeing everyone/playing that he crashes in the car on the way home. Skip bedtime routine, roll with it

I would go with B, but not stress about the third nap. At 6 months, my LO would sleep well while being worn. She also loves being around people, so being at a big family dinner would help avoid any bedtime meltdowns.

i imagine other parents have or will have to deal with this, so hopefully you can help with suggestions ...

we have a big family dinner scheduled for Christmas eve. It's going to be at a restaurant with the reservation at 6:30p. coincidentally, we start LO's 40-minute bedtime routine at 6:30.

so I'm not sure what to do. Do we ...
A: drive to the restaurant and get there by 6:30 and try to do a version of his bedtime routine in the car. and then hope he sleeps in the ergo through dinner (once we join dinner 45 minutes late)?
B: try to get him to take a 3rd nap in the afternoon (he pretty much always refuses this nap), and then have him up during dinner. and just push back bedtime until he crashes?
C: [your suggestion?]

for reference, LO is 6 months old. we do not have a stroller or infant car seat, just the big convertible car seat. And dinner will most definitely be noisy with other kids.
