I'm remaining in denial about DST. I'm looking forward to earlier bedtime, but I'm hoping to convince M not to wake up later. I know I'm delusional, lol.

i actually forgot what we did last year this time, so i looked it up and we had success with pushing bedtime back in 15 minute increments. these days (at 21 months) her bedtime can be anywhere between 730 and 8, so i doubt pushing it back will make a difference to her. i think we're in for a 630 wake up. boo!

ETA: here's my post from last year! http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/pushing-bedtime-back-over-the-week-worked

My first LO was a bad sleeper and we didn't do anything special for DST. His bedtime was around 8, but we would kind of just go off his clues for when in general he was getting tired. He probably went to bed a little later that first day and then was generally back the next.

I think if you are worried, you could try moving bedtime, but you would have to move the whole sleep schedule. My LO got tired based on how long he had been awake, not what time it was. So maybe the day before it ends, you could try moving naps up an hour.

I don't think that bed time is late at all! We put our first to bed around 9. Our pediatrician said it was a little late, but as long as he got enough sleep that was fine. He eventually moved closer to 8.

@gilmoregirl: really?! I had no idea Arizona didn't have DST! And how confusing about the Navajo Nation! Lol.

I'm still conflicted about this whole thing. I'm thinking I'll just roll with it too. Why can't babies just sleep in like we do??

@Mae: I never changed R's bedtime and it was fine. I won't be changing it for either her or S this year either. If he wakes up earlier I plan on sending DH in or nursing him as though he woke in the middle of the night. R is old enough that I can tell her it is still nighttime :silly:

@BabyTsMom: Arizona doesn't either! It was confusing, though, when I was there :) Especially because the Navajo Nation does recognize DST. I never knew what time it was!

I've been thinking about this too, but his sleep has been so screwy lately that I think we're just going to roll with it and hope for the best...I am kind of okay with early wakeups because I have to get up at 5:30 for work anyway. Emphasis on "kind of."

@Mae: Lol! I am also starting to get nervous about this! Things we never thought twice about before having a kid............... I don't think Hawaii has DST. Maybe I should move there. :)

I plan on keeping DS up late the night before - as close to the extra hour as possible. He may well still wake up an hour early the next day - as a later bedtime doesn't usually affect his wake up time, but I think after the following day of naps all at the new times he should manage to adjust. Hopefully I'm not eating my words next weekend!

Can any moms of bad sleepers chime in here? Last year, LO was still young and I was still on Mat leave, so her wakeups were still all over the place.

But if your child is generally a bad sleeper, how does DST usually affect them?

I always moved bedtime on that night by 30 mins - that way it wasn't a huge change in either direction - we never had any huge issue with it

I've been living in fear of DST and have been trying to push back my LOs bedtime incrementally already, so that I have two weeks to do it. BUT, she is responding by waking up at the same time or earlier and getting less sleep over all. We have already been at it for over a week and she's still waking up anywhere from 4:45-5:30 am, which will be 3:45-4:30 am after DST and at that point I will die from lack of sleep.

I *really* need to get her to sleep until 6:30 so that after the time change, it's 5:30--but how to do that?

I always planned to move bedtime in increments, but I never actually executed. It doesn't really make a difference in my son's crappy sleep anyway.

I've never adjusted bed times for DST for my son. When he was a couple of months old, it didn't make a difference. Last year when he was one, he woke up at 5 am but adjusted the next day. Unfortunately, he was always an early riser until he was maybe 16 months or so.

I would do it incrementally. Like 15 mins a night for a few nights at a time. It might take her a little while to adjust but she might.

So right now our LO is 5 mo and usually falls asleep right around 9. Bedtime is between 8 and 8:30, and she is usually down 45-60 min after bedtime (will probably be a little shorter once she's more established with sleep training, right now it usually takes her about 15 min to fall asleep once we put her down).

She wakes up around 615-645 most days. If she ends up going to bed later for some reason, she still gets up at the same time. I tried putting her to bed at 7:30 (she was asleep by 8) earlier this week because she'd missed her last nap and was sooo tired... she woke up at 445. Sooo that sucked.

With DST I'm not sure what to do about her bedtime. I know that *most* babies her age go to sleep earlier than she does, so if we just didn't do anything her internal clock would keep on ticking the same and we could put her down between 7-7:30 and she'd be asleep around 8 and that would be normal. But if nothing changed than she'd be getting up between 515 and 545 and I'm really not cool with that.

If we work on pushing her bedtime back in small increments so it is still 8-8:30, maybe she'd push back her awake time too? When we have a one-off night where she goes to bed later she doesn't wake up later, but maybe if it was every night?

I just wish there was a way to try know because it seems like if we move her bedtime back and she's getting up really early still, and then we move it earlier that is a lot of back and forth and change for her.

What would you do? What are you going to do?
