No, no and no. She can be a carrier and not get it. You, DH or LO can be a carrier the give it to someone in the house. It is so so much worse when adults get it. But I also can't imagine how rough it would be for a newborn to have HFM. DD1 got it a while back then DH got it. His manifested into shingles due to the stress it placed on his immune system. It was horrible. Just, no.

I would rather ask the pediatrician you plan to use. Yes, an OB will know of it, but a pediatrician will be more used to the practical applications of dealing with it.

Personally, I'd say no if you went into labor in the next week, but it's probably fine if the baby comes near or after your due date. By then, I think the chance of the virus still being around is fairly slim. BUT definitely ask your OB and pediatrician and go with their advice!!!

Actually I would ask your pediatrician rather than your OB.

@LBee: Oh, I totally agree! As much as I would love to have her there (since she has done it 4 times,) some things are more important.

It depends on the amount of time since the "outbreak." They say by the time the blisters emerge, you are no longer contagious.

I would ask your OB, but candidly - I think your sister would feel worse if your baby got HFM than if she had to sit out on being your labor coach. (I don't mean that meanly and I hope you don't take it that way!!) So don't let that stop you.

I'd agree that your OB should be notified and he/she can give you the risks!

This feels like a somewhat bizarre question but we have plans for my sister to be my labor coach (I am 38 weeks) but all four of her kids have come down with HFMD. If her kids are still sick when I go into labor, she will obviously not be my labor coach. Apparently, my sister had it as a child but I have read there are different strands and you can be a carrier without having symptoms.

So here's my question...would you feel comfortable with your newborn being in contact with someone whose kids recently had HFMD? I in no way want to make my sis feel bad but my baby's health is top priority.

ETA: I will definitely ask my OB at my next appointment, but just wanted to get an idea since I have no experience with HFMD.
