@meganmp: it didn't go at all. DH wouldn't let me fire her. He wants us to wait & see how things go after school & her surgery is over. Depending on hiw her surgery goes she maybe off all summer which would be an easy out for us. He doesn't fire people, I'm the one who likes to fire people. When we go out to eat & our service sucks then he still tips 20% if I had my way I'd do 10 or 15% because I reward for good service. If its a good service I give 30+ does that make since...Anyway I told him id stick it out till the 30th after that if things still suck & I want her gone then he has to let her go!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I told her after she reduced her hours & had missed a couple days that it was getting har for me to get everything done in that short of a time. also reminded her to give me at least 24 hr notice if she knows she isn't feeling well so I can cancel my training sessions & not lose the money I spent for it.

She just doesn't seem that into working anymore. We are pinching pennies to have her around & right now she is costing me more money by having her not show up. Im going out with DH tonight getting a margaritas & talking to him about it. I was going to wait till Friday to fire her but I think tonight will have to be the night :-(

I understand your frustration. We had someone who had the flu two or three times, but had the flu shot, and twice she took her teenage son snowboarding when she couldn't come here "because of the flu". She was fired.

It sounds like it's not a huge priority for her, so I'd just let her go right out and maybe give her a week of extra pay. Such a bummer she doesn't have a reliable schedule since she does great with your kids. :-/

If you dont want to fire her outright, put the ball in her court by telling her that you either need her to meet the agreed upon schedule or not to come at all. She might just admit its too hard and quit or she might start being more reliable!

I would probably just tell her that her schedule no longer works, maybe give her a day or two's pay and say have a good one. I don't think a 2 weeks notice is necessary when she probably wouldn't even be able to work most of it.

Oh my gosh! I cannot even imagine teaching full time (which I do) plus being a nanny  . I am not sure if she is trying to get fired or if it's just not practical for her to have a second job. I would tell her that it seems that her schedule is not accomodating enough and you need the most reliable help possible because your family depends on this childcare.

we didn't give a two week notice when we fired our nanny, but we did pay her for an additional two weeks. i didn't want to fire her but have her continue coming in because i think she'd just be like "what's the point?"

and i agree that you should let her go. you have to go with your gut when it comes to childcare. if she's uninterested and unreliable, don't work with her. there are plenty of other good people you can find.

Can you talk with her and tell her you expect her to be reliable and ANY schedule changes must be arranged at least two weeks in advance? If she does great with your kids, maybe it would be worth giving her a second chance, once you clarify exactly what your expectations are.

Scroll down for the short version.

We have had a nanny around about 3-4 months now & when she is here she does great! She knows the kids & their schedules well. She is a teacher during the day so she works 430-830 with us MWF. She reduced her hours to 430-730 till the end of the school year. Losing that extra hour has really cut into what I can/can't get done. Friday she had a "fun night" at school come up that she forgot to tell me about. She got sick Sunday night but didn't tell me till Monday afternoon so I lost the training session I had paid for. Then she text me Tuesday saying she went to the dr. got antibiotics & asked if I wanted her to come to work. I said no come in on Wednesday. Today she reminds me that she has a softball meeting Monday night & wont be able to work. & can't pick up the hours Tuesday because she has a teachers meeting that night.....oh and at the end of May she has to have ankle surgery.

ALL this crap came up with in the last week. I was willing to work with her on reduced hours but this seems to be to much has she has now become unreliable. DH thinks we should wait it out but he doesn't have to deal with the fall out of her not showing up. Honestly I could do with out her now. She was nice to have around right after the kids were born but now its more of a PIA.

Anyways. Long story summed up. This is not her main income and is just a PT gig for extra spending cash. If she was not working for us this summer she would just be taking the summer off (which I think is what she wants anyways). So do I give her a two week notice or just tell her on Friday not to come back next week?
