So creepy. I would be furious. I would definitely ask her to leave, definitely never allow her to be alone with the baby again, and may say she can never come to our house again.

ETA: And by asking her to leave, I mean I would ask her to leave RIGHT THEN. No waiting till the morning. Get the heck outta my house!

Yikes, that's really weird. I would probably snap on MIL right then and there. I wouldn't just take my baby and go away and I wouldn't be able to let DH talk to her at some later point. I would freak out right then and there. Probably make her leave the house immediately too. Obviously I wouldn't call the cops, but I also would take care of matters myself and tell DH about it but make sure that I let her know where the boundries are.

@Mrsbells: Yah I think you may be right. Sometimes I put my finger/knuckle in Olive's mouth to comfort her.

There was an episode of "Bored to Death" where Zach Galifianakis offered his nipple to a screaming toddler and it worked. Still, that would never occur to me!!

That is just weird, and honestly, a little sad. It sounds like her MIL desperately misses that "connection" from the newborn stage. I would definitely not call the police, that seems pretty extreme, and really, what law would she have been breaking?! But I would have a conversation with her about boundaries and I would definitely not be comfortable with leaving her to babysit or help out with the baby 1 on 1.

@artbee: Maybe the baby was sucking the nipple as a pacifier and was enjoying the body heat and sound of heartbeat. My baby sometimes wants to nurse not out of hunger but just to be soothed.

That is majorly over stepping some boundaries! I'd be super creeped out. Not okay. She would most definitely not be allowed with LO alone ever again. She'd be lucky if she was allowed at my house.

I'm confused. Wouldn't the baby still be crying if they weren't getting any milk out of the boob? I agree with everyone else. No police, but she would never be allowed alone with my LO again. Luckily I know this would never happen to me.

I would be completely shocked!!! I’d have my husband talk to her and make her aware that it was NOT okay. We’d be very wary about her being with our baby unattended and I think it would take quite a while before I could get over it.

OMG, I would also make the MIL leave and would not allow her to be alone with the child, probably ever. That is crossing a line that no grandparent (or another woman for that matter) should cross in my mind. It sounds like a horrible Lifetime movie waiting to happen!

This scenario comes from a weekly advice column I read. A woman's MIL got up in the middle of the night to soothe her 2-month old baby. The woman thought the MIL would bring the baby to her to nurse. Some time passed and the woman thought the MIL might need some help so she went to check on baby and MIL in nursery and found MIL allowing the baby to suckle on her breast. She took the baby away and told MIL she had to leave in the morning. (Her DH was away). She wants to call the police but her husband says no.

http://www.slate.com/articles/life/dear_prudence/2012/07/dear_prudie_i_caught_my_mother_in_law_breast_feeding_my_son_what_do_i_do_.html?wpisrc=newsletter_rubric

What would you do?

I would have been in shock and would have asked her to leave, too. I wouldn't call the police but MIL would not be allowed to be alone with my child and it might even be awhile before she could see the baby again!
