Some homeowner's insurance companies will take care of that preemptively to avoid a large claim later, so if you don't make progress with the city, I would leave a note on his door telling him you've noticed the dead tree and it concerns you and perhaps he should call his insurer about it. Maybe leave the contact information of some local arborists or tree trimming companies too.

@autumnleaves: your electric utility would be a good call too, if it's near any electric lines.

@Banana330: @Mrs. Microscope: @psw27: thank you ladies! I emailed the city and will see what they say. Hopefully they can help address this.

I would call the city! I agree, the danger of it crashing to the street would bother me - especially with winter coming.

Our city is good about sending notices. I agree, call the city arborist! (that's the title here in Denver, at least!)

is there a number you can call at the city and report it? they can come and check the health/remove if needed.

Our neighbor has a large dead tree that is partially uprooted and leaning on a decaying planter bed. I noticed it a couple of months ago. When it falls, it will fall into the street and not our yard but I am still stressed by this.
He is not a social neighbor and we rarely see him. Would you leave him a note and ask if he is aware he has this dead tree, would you try to talk with him in person, or would you not worry about it since it's not going to fall on your house?
I drive by it to take LO to daycare and every time I think this tree can land on any car or person walking by. I want to express concern to him but I am not sure if that would be taken well by him.
TIA
