@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Interesting, I can't say I know much about Mormons but it seems as though it could require an awfully big commitment for someone who isn't sure about it. I wonder if there is a way to try it out?

I had a religion professor in college who was a devout Catholic and told us that when he and his wife moved to a new area they would always spend months "shopping" for a church. It was an eye opening way to look at churches for me, I always thought that if you are X religion you just go to the matching church that is closest to you and call it good. The fact that he and his wife spent time looking for a priest and community that were a good fit in addition to sharing their religion was a really comforting idea.

I find my own thoughts on religion are quite similar to your own, I was brought up "culturally Catholic" but it isn't a good match for my own beliefs. I liked the quiz here: http://www.beliefnet.com/Entertainment/Quizzes/BeliefOMatic.aspx

It matches me almost perfectly with Quaker which I found to be a great fit for me. I sadly no longer live in a community with a Quaker community but if we ever move it will be one of the first things we seek out.

Hey girls! I attend a great bible-teaching church. I don't think such churches are hard to find. I like @lovelyseeker: 's advice. Best of luck to you, @Mrs. Lemon-Lime:. You are doing an exciting thing!

@mrs. lemon lime I completely understand what you mean about often finding that churches don't have that much to do with the actual teachings of Christ. This is something I have been struggling with myself. On the other hand, when I do find someone else that actually tries to follow Christ, not just the "American church culture", it is invaluable. So I just keep on trying!

Wishing you lots of luck with your dilemma.

so from what i'm reading, it sounds like you are searching for a progressive place where there is a belief in christ and the bible is read, but that it isn't used to oppress or alienate, it's used to support and accept. couple thoughts for you, you might want to look in your area for first churches or UCC churches. sometimes the lines blur a bit because of the congregation attending. UCC is a very similar type of congregation to a UU church- diverse and liberal (perform same sex marriage), but there is still a central belief in christ, unlike in a UU church where that is not a requirement (FWIW i've started going to a UU church and there are plenty of ppl there that believe in christ and sometimes the bible is read, but it isn't the center of the teachings in church, so that may or may not be a good fit). here's a website that might be of interest http://www.ucc.org/
also if you were looking for someone to perform a blessing at home, i think you could find someone to do so. MIL has had services done at her house and they're catholic. if you're willing to pay for it, it can happen! you could even look for ministers that perform wedding ceremonies outside a church, often they are more flexible, and ask them about performing a blessing ceremony in your home.

@sloaneandpuffy: Thank you. I just googled it and that's more of a fit! My past church experiences included Catholic church (my mom's faith) or black Baptist churches and non-denominational churches with more diverse congregations.

@Happygal: I had not heard of Red Letter churches, but my dad used a Red Letter Bible.

@mrs. lemon-line: have you heard of red-letter churches? They are places where they focus on the teachings of Jesus. I wish there was one in my area b/c like you, that's what I hold onto.

@lovelyseeker: hmm, I am actually conflicted about that. I find my professed faith to be quite hyprocritical and judgemental. The part that I hold onto are the teachings of Christ, who was inclusive, generous, and forgiving.

Every time I have studied the Bible with a group of practicing Christians the hairs on my arm stand up because there is something fundamentally in opposition of what I believe. As much as I want to give my child faith the way I didn't have it growing up, I am concerned about him/her becoming less accepting of all types of people.

@MrsRoo: I don't know if my MIL belongs to a church, but she is 4 hours away anyway. Hosting the post baptism event (sip & see) in her toewn would be cost prohibitve. hotel + venue + catering etc.

@sloaneandpuffy: I'm not even preggers yet, so yeah I have plenty of time to find a church. I want to have a baptism/ blessing ceremony* when the baby is 6-8 weeks old though.

* If it's at home, I'll call it a blessing ceremony.

It sounds like your faith is pretty important to you, since you want to pass it on to lo. I think I would take some time to figure out how to make it a part of your parenting beyond just the baptism. As part of that, finding a church might be a great step.
(Figuring out how my faith affects who I am as a mom is something I've been thinking a lot myself lately).

Depending on your beliefs you have lots of time! My son was baptized at one year and my daughter will be dedicated at one year (new pastor ha different views). So if there's no hurry you can still shop for a church :) blessings!

I'm in a similar situation. DH and I don't have a home church that we are members of. We are going to have LO baptized in my in laws church. It's the church DH grew up in, and since in laws are members, we can have our LO baptized there.

Is there a family member who belongs to a church you like that might baptize your LO? I like your idea about a home blessing, if someone else has a suggestion about how to make that happen, I'd be interested in hearing that, too!

As a non-practicing, semi-faithful Christian without a Church home, I am concerned my baby will not have a proper Baptism

Were you under similar circumstances and what did you do?

I have thought about attending churches to try and find a good fit. Maybe become a bit more faithful.

What I really just want is a legitimate at-home prayerful ceremony. Most of my friends, like me, believe in Christ, but none of us are ordained.
