I would send 4 oz bottles, but send one or two more than you think you would need in case he gets hungry. Daycares have to throw milk out after an hour. Your baby should adjust to the new way of eating pretty soon! My daughter would never want a bottle if I was around, but she took to them when I was working pretty quickly once she realized nursing wasn't an option!

Agree with the others, I would send 1 extra bottle than what you think he will eat but keep the portions in each bottle small. Don't waste that liquid gold! Once he gets the hang of the bottle and daycare, he might want larger bottles. Good luck!

My 8 week old is similar. I pack 4 4 oz bottles for 7-9 hours (and feed him before and right after). He never takes them all (7 oz is his record). On days I'm in the office we spend about an hour nursing when I get home and another hour before bed, but it doesn't impact middle of the night feeds at all.

I would send 4 ounce bottles. I have never done weighted feeds, but DS2 will take at most 3 ounces from a bottle, and even that can be a struggle. I am very confident that he takes significantly more than that from me directly, both from weight gain and how much I pump. He does not act hungry during the day. The first several weeks he would want to nurse for a very long time when I got home, but I think some of that was wanting more snuggles. He actually started sleeping longer stretches after I went back to work.

Can you keep anything in the freezer at daycare? It would be great to send 4 - 4.5oz bottles and keep a couple bags in the freezer with 1 or 2 ounces just in case he wants more.

@JoyfulKiwi: Yeah that's a good idea. I will probably try to cluster feed in the morning and evening

I'd send 4-5 oz bottles at first (with an extra or maybe some frozen milk). He may drink more from the bottle after a few days of getting it consistently & then you could bump up the amount. In the meantime, maybe you can try cluster feeding to prevent reverse cycling?

I would send 4-5 oz bottles, but send extra in case he eats more often while he's there!

@LatteLove: crazy right?! When he was two weeks old, I had a lactation consultant here and she did a weighed feeding with her scale and he took 5 ounces from just one breast! She said it was a record for her!

@travellingbee: I never had a big oversupply so I was paranoid about wasting milk. What I did the first week was send 4 oz bottles and a few 2 oz frozen bags. That way, if she still seemed hungry after a 4 oz feed, they could just give her a little top-off 2 ounces, but if she wasn't hungry those extra 2 oz didn't go to waste.

You'll probably figure out after a week or so how much to send. We ended up sending 4.5 oz bottles.

I'd start out with 4oz as well! They will tell you if he seems to want more, but better not to waste than precious breastmilk if he's not drinking it!

Side note, I'm amazed your babe is getting so much from you breastfeeding! When we did weighed feedings, the most he ever got was around 3oz (but my son would want 5+ oz from a bottle)!

I'd send 4 oz (5oz at most) bottles and just send one extra than you think will be needed. Then, if it's not used keep it for the next day.

So my 3 month old (today!) giant baby is 17lbs. I've been doing weighed feedings with him for the past week to try to figure out how much he is eating (we have an accurate baby scale). He takes between 5 and 8 ounces directly from me, but when we've given him a bottle, he never wants more than 4, (and really doesn't love the bottle). Should I send 4 ounce bottles or try sending 6 ounce bottles (or more?!) and hope he eventually starts taking the bottle as well as the breast. I realize my kid is a big eater (and a big baby) but he seems to be thriving (and sleeping pretty well at night!) with the amount that he takes when breastfeeding and I hate for him to start eating less during the day and then start waking more at night! WWYD?

ETA: I should add I'm returning to work in two days.
