My insurance only covered a manual pump also so I registered for a double electric. A great friend of ours got it for us. We're so fortunate and thankful because like you, I don't have time to manually pump two boobs at work!

@PurplePeony: You're welcome! No problem. I called and asked "What does my policy cover for breast pumps? Now that the Affordable Care Act provisions kicked in in Aug. 2012, what sort of breast pump coverage do they comply with? Specifically for a double electric, since I will be pumping at work when I return from mat. leave."

She said that my insurance was ACA compliant by offering one manual. She then brought up my DME coverage, and told me I'd be covered at 100% (as there aren't supposed to be co-pays for anything re: breast pumps or lactation consultants, etc) so long as I got it from a DME provider in-network. She was super helpful and even called me back to correct herself and say that technically they're good w/ the manual, so I would be expected to the 20% on my co-insurance. Fine by me!

After that I clarified whether I needed a prescription or not and if I could get it before delivery. I scored mine in September and I'm not due until February. Since it was DME, it didn't need to follow the manual pump time limits they'd set.

@lemondrop: Thank you, I like your reasoning. The ability to keep or resell the pump is one of the things drawing me toward the Hygeia, in addition to the generally good reviews it seems to get. We will probably have two kids but aren't totally set on it, so the flexibility is good.

@indi: Awesome information, thank you so much! I will definitely try again. I was hoping to talk to someone face-to-face at our benefits fair, but with the gov't shutdown (I'm a federal employee) I don't know if and when we'll actually be having one. Did you bring up your special circumstance with the rep or did she? The one I talked to was very cut-and-dried about it so I never thought to ask about exceptions. I do need a prescription from my provider to get a pump but that's the least of my worries...

@PurplePeony: It may be worth it to try back. Our policies sound similar (one manual or a rental). However, I called a different day and asked another advisor, and she said that while they'd cover a manual, if I had a need for a double electric (WOH, pumping more often, separated from baby for periods of time), they would process it as durable medical equipment and I only had to pay my 20%, they covered 80%. I didn't even need a script, I just had to get it through a qualified retailer that was in-network.

Be sure to take good notes, because when the DME provider calls through to process it, they may talk to someone that's not aware of the potential DME option. The DME provider called me back, I told her exactly what to say to insurance from my convo with the knowledgable agent, and boom, new Medela PISA for $50 out of pocket. Could be worth an extra call or two.

@PurplePeony: If you register for it and take advantage of the 6 month free insurance rental- leave it unopened until you know if bf'ing is right for you. That way you can return it for something you would use sans guilt if it doesn't work out.

We have enough mommy guilt over plenty of other things, don't let this one give you any- we can't know the future, if someone wants to generously gift you a pump, then take advantage of it! If all goes as planned, you will get so much use out of this piece of equipment, you can think of them fondly with each and every wonderful intimate pumping session ;)

Also are you planning on having more kids? Since we were planning more, I went with the Hygeia knowing that 1) I could sell it if it didn't work out and 2) the expense would be dispersed among multiple kids if it did work (we paid out of pocket unfortunately since this was before the insurance updates, but it was worth every penny). I'm still going to check with my insurance about a new one for baby #2 so I have a backup.

i put a pump on our registry despite the fact that i'll be getting one from insurance, because i wanted the best option for pumping at work, and my insurance didn't offer that, and i didn't want to commute back and forth with one pump every day (i have a long walk). if someone buys it (which i don't really expect!) i don't plan on opening that pump until ive used the insurance pump and seen how BFing is going, and if no one buys it, i'll use the completion discount to get it after the fact.

@dagret: That makes sense. My shower will be pretty small so I'm not anticipating having a ton of stuff to return, but you're right that there will probably be something. I just never really thought about my insurance not covering the purchase of a pump because they're usually good about things, so when I heard the policy it threw a wrench in my plans!

@PurplePeony: Don't open it until your rental is completed - if you don't open it you can return it! (within a certain timeframe I think, though!)
OR
put it on your registry AFTER your shower for registry completion discount.

@autumnlove: @cmomma17: @lemondrop: My hesitation with putting it on my registry is that I'd feel really bad in the event BFing doesn't work out...I'd rather have people buy stuff I know we'll be able to use. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind the completion discount if I have to buy it myself!

put it on your registry, but still get the hospital rental for as long as they let you have it.

you might not get it - but then it can qualify for registry completion discount. And you will have stuff you'll return for store credit.

That's what I did - i got a hospital rental for the beginning, then bought my pump mostly with return credits, and also bought a manual to have on-hand.

That's a bummer. I don't know what you should do, but I put my pump and all related accessories on my registry. You never know what people will buy. Nobody bought my pump (and then I was able to get it through insurance) but I did get fully stocked up in nursing pads and the lanisoh gel.
I put it all on the registry initially because of registry completion discounts. Most places give 10% off any remaining items you buy. I wanted to have that extra 10% off if I needed it.

So, I'm due in December and called my insurance to find out what the pump policy is, since I couldn't find it in writing anywhere. Apparently they will either rent me one for six months or I can get my own manual one, but they won't pay for a double electric. I'm planning to return to work after my 12-week maternity leave is up, so the manual option is just not going to work. I'm planning to take advantage of the rental, but I'm hoping to BF until around a year so I'll need to figure something else out.

In this situation, would you:

a) put a pump on the registry and hope someone buys it;
b) just go with the rental at first, make sure everything goes well with BFing, and buy my own pump at a later date;
c) scope out a used Hygeia Enjoie pump and new tubes/flanges/etc (it's a closed system so safe for multiple users) to have as backup/after I have to return the rental
d) other?

I really can't decide what's best! I generally like my insurance plan, but this part is really annoying...
