@regberadaisy: they are having everything on site of the reception (rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, ceremony, reception) its going to be a short 15 minute ceremony. I imagine we will meet with the venues coordinator they will give us instruction we may walk up and down the aisle then head in for the dinner. If it was a more complicated or full mass there would be a lot more instruction involved. The last wedding i was in that had this type of ceremony did not have a rehearsal we were given instructions right before the ceremony started

Is this actually going to be a "rehearsal" of the ceremony?

And no, I'm sure everyone else is probably grumbling too! :) Truth be told I wouldn't have made plans that weekend knowing the wedding was that weekend. But I understand it's your only vacation week possible. ;)

As the MOH I think you do need to be at the rehearsal. If you think its all too much and rather just be a guest you can tell her

I'd go and come back for the dinner. I drive ten hours by myself at 32 weeks and was totally fine. It's not like you'll be drinking, and there will be far less traffic at night vs. The morning of the fourth.

My commute is often an hour, and I did that till I was 38 weeks pregnant with my last kid, so an hour doesn't sound like much to me, to be honest. If I were worried about traffic, I'd probably plan to nap during the day on the 3rd and then just drive back that night after the rehearsal. All told, if traffic isn't too bad, you'll be gone maybe 5-6 hours in total? That doesn't sound like ruining a vacation to me, plus it sounds like she had a pretty good reason for scheduling on the 3rd, since her fiance is doing the community a public service by being on duty on a night when I'm sure firefighters are pretty busy.

ETA: I stopped doing my commute at 38 weeks because that's when I went into labor. Not because I didn't want to commute anymore :)

The way i phrased it when i was talking to her was "what would happen if i couldn't make it? this is what i'm up against." I want to be there and i feel i should be there, i'm just not looking forward to the timing of it. I'm also curious to see what 2 of the other girls are doing since theyre coming from out of town (NY state and WV) will they rent rooms from wed-sunday and stay or back out as well

Hmm... Reading the extra info, I guess I wonder if you could go up and back in the one evening. If you leave late, like after dinner, getting back to the shore shouldn't be TOO bad. I definitely would plan to do it that night, not the next morning. And as for the 6 months pregnant part, I drove from Boston to NJ a few weeks ago, just about six months pregnant, by myself and it was totally fine. So really it would just be the one evening you miss of the vacation. But you also have the right to see how you are feeling and if you are having any complications or whatever, say you can't go, but now it sounds like maybe you should at least try-- only because you are the MOH though.

That's a tough one either way.

@mrsmenow: yes, but i have a feeling my mom would try to convince me to sleep over "you must be so tired, and its so far and late" or i would go to the rehearsal and leave the dinner on the early side, its not like i'll be drinking and partying all night

@Foodnerd81: since your familiar with NJ the vacation is Ocean City and the venue is closer in Philadelphia (blackwood i think) no traffic on the AC expressway it would take an hour

@Chillybear: do you trust your friends to leave them at the house? Personally, I feel as MOH you need to be at the rehearsal and if your husband doesn't feel comfortable having you drive he should just go with you? I would drive back after dinner as well or at least bow out of dinner early?

@regberadaisy: @Foodnerd81: The week of the 4th my company "shuts down" and if i'm going to take a week in the summer i cant really go into work that week and then take another week. The shore house belongs to my inlaws and we planned to take this week after we did the same trip last year. She set the date this past dec. I dont expect her to keep track of my vacation plans but she was with us for a few days last year

Hubs wouldnt go with me because we will most likely have friends joining on our vacation. we give an open invite to whomever want to join us since we have 2 extra bedrooms. We wouldnt just leave them at the house while we go to the rehearsal.

If it's only an hour each way, I'd go. I drive an hour + every day just for my commute to work, both ways. So...two + hours in the car. Last friday, there were 3 wrecks and it took me 3 hours to get home. It sucked, but I survived...and I'm 7 1/2 months pregnant.

Edited to say I would definitely drive back the hour the night of July 3rd, to avoid some of the July 4th traffic.

I think since she spring the earlier rehearsal dinner on your kind of late in the game, she may have to get over it. She's getting married on a holiday weekend, there are going to be conflicts. She knew that when she set the date. You made allowances for the holiday weekend and planned to come back in time for what you assumed would be the rehearsal dinner. It's less than 2 months out now and LOTS of people would have made their plans already. If it would close or easy, I would say yes, do it, but I'm from NJ and I know what the shore traffic would be like-- an absolutely nightmare. I think having wedding events straddling the holiday like that is really inconvenient.

That said, did you check with her before you made your travel plans? As MOH, you probably should have, so I can see how she would be upset if you can't make it, but at the same time, if the location is an hour away without traffic, that's easily a 3 hour trip back on July 4.

ETA: Wait-- I think I just made an assumption that it's in NJ because of the shore part-- my response is if it is in NJ an hour away from the Jersey shore... but that might be a false interpretation!

I'll try to keep this short and to the point without delving into the history of our friendship.

I'm MoH in my cousin's wedding on July 6, (she was also my MoH 3 years ago) She scheduled the rehearsal dinner for july 3 because her fiance, a firefighter, is working a 24 hour shift on the 4th. I will be on vacation at the jersey shore from 6/29-7/6 which is an hour away from the venue. We are planning on cutting our vacation short in order to be ready for the wedding and are coming home the day before. We had originally assumed the rehearsal would be the day before the wedding and the ceremony is going to be very short and casual.

I will be 6+ months pregnant and in order to attend the rehearsal will have to leave our house guests and my husband at the shore, while leaving him without a car (guests will most likely have a car). Then either drive back after the dinner or sleep at my parents and drive back in 4th of july traffic the next day. My husband is wary about me driving by myself, that he wont have a vehicle, and that this is our only and last vacation before baby.

I broached the subject with her last night and while she started off being very understanding, hours later texted me that she was very upset. so what would you do?
