I would keep my mouth shut. Cray cray mommies were giving Prince William and Kate shit when they took pics of the baby in the carseat (before in the car). You could totally tell that Kate was adjusting the straps once they snapped the seat into the base, but that didn't stop many people from bitching.

Like others have said, you don't know what happened afterwards (you never can tell from a picture), so I wouldn't say anything unless I actually saw it happening.

@Adira: I would probably send a message saying congrats and an invite to the Car Seats for the Littles fb group and any other parenting links or resources you like. And just say something like 'I learn so much on this so I send it to all my new parent friends.'

My friends have sent me links and book recs and I don't feel judged or anything, just helped!

@Foodnerd81: We got ours checked for free at the police station. Police stations, fire stations, and hospitals usually have a certified carseat technician. The one who checked ours gave me so much peace of mind!

i'm not saying that YOU specifically should say something but the pp's comments about pissing off your friend bother me. i agree, you are likely to offend him by correcting him but at what point does a child's safety become more important than someone's feelings?

it's one thing when you see an adult doing something unsafe that would only affect them, such as riding a bike without a helmet, but it's totally different when it's a child that has no say in the matter...

you have to do what you're comfortable with.

In your specific situation I wouldn't. I wouldn't say anything to anyone I don't have direct contact with on a normal basis. Like PPs said, you have o real way of knowing if the pic was taken pre adjustment. If it was a close coworker or friend, I might try to find a way to bring it up in conversation, something like 'Oh one of the hardest things for me in the beginning was learning all the carseat safety rules...I ended up using this website and it was great/going to the fire station for an inspection and it helped a lot!' etc.

I took a pic of DS in his new convertible car seat in the house before we installed in in the truck and someone wrote "he's too young to be forward facing, I thing doing a little research would change your opinion too :)". Umm it wasn't even in the vehicle yet! Of course my 8 month old would continue to be rear facing, I was super annoyed. You never know the whole context of a photo.

I would myob.

A few weeks ago I posted a picture of LO in her car seat before I adjusted her straps. The chest strap was down low but I immediately readjusted after I took the pic.
Sometimes people are just excited and take a pic and post it not thinking people will be analyzing it.

I thought about not posting my picture when I realized I hadn't adjusted the strap but then thought, eh who cares.

No one has ever checked our buckles, at the hospital or anywhere else. Honestly I'm always nervous I'm doing it wrong. If someone called me out on it in a private fb message I would be grateful, but I might be the minority. I'm also really afraid Dh doesn't do it right. We were leaving a party and the chest clip was in the wrong spot and before I could fix it another mom swooped in and corrected it. I was glad bc Dh thinks I worry to much but this isn't too much screen time, it's her safety.

So personally I wouldn't mind if you sent the message you suggested. Then again we walked her somewhere in the car seat so the straps were on but loose and I put a note on the picture saying so so people wouldn't have this reaction :)

Yeah, I would keep my mouth shut. You don't know that he didn't adjust the straps after taking the picture, and really, there is no way to say anything to him without sounding incredibly judgmental and to be honest, a bit rude. I think you just have to assume that he is somewhat intelligent and has enough common sense to know the straps needed to be tightened.

If you feel you must do something, find an article later this week on car seat safety and link to it on your FB page...anything beyond that is crossing the line in my opinion... :-/

@Mrs. Polish: That's a good point about the hospital - we didn't buckle Xander in in front of anyone, but they checked that we had done it correctly after and adjusted the straps and chest clip if they were wrong. So that's a good point that these people probably had a similar experience and know what they're doing.

Also, I've taken a picture of Xander in his car seat unbuckled as well, to get a picture of his outfit. I would assume if a baby was completely unbuckled, then it was a picture to get the outfit (though maybe I'm making that assumption because I've done the same thing), but this baby IS buckled and just the straps are totally loose and the caption is about going for a ride - so I don't think it's a picture to show off his outfit! But maybe he's the kind of baby that cries in the car seat, so they wanted to snap a picture of him BEFORE tightening his straps and making him cry!

I keep trying to think how I would feel if I posted a picture of Xander and then someone came along pointing out that I was doing something wrong. I mean, I definitely would want to KNOW so I could correct it, but I could definitely see myself getting annoyed and defensive too!

I've been criticized for having a picture of lo in his car seat unbuckled.

I had sat him in there to take a picture of his clothes, but someone assumed Ithought the buckles were for fun.

Before we left the hospital they made us use the car seat properly I'm front of them and they told us what we were doing wrong. I assume everyone gets this training.

I think about how my husband would react, which would probably be annoyed. Not that he doesn't want correct information, but he would have a super difficult time seeing past the "calling out" part.

When I had concerns that our son's infant seat wasn't at the correct angle, I had to show him that it was literally not angled correctly with a piece of paper. Then he got it, so everyone is different.

Something like this came up awhile ago on the Boards and many people said stay out of it. However, I think baby safety is paramount. I would send your friend a FB message and likely direct him to your message with a wall post or post on the actual pic. Then just give him facts in the message. No judgnent just information.

I have a coworker that I'm Facebook friends with. I used to work on the same project as this person a few years ago, but we no longer work together. Although we both still work in the same building, I rarely see this person anymore and just keep up to date on his life through Facebook.

My coworker recently had a baby. Yesterday, he posted a photo of his baby in his car seat with the caption "Ready for a ride!" The baby was sitting in the car seat with the buckle and chest clip together, but the straps were INCREDIBLY loose. So loose that they weren't even over the baby's shoulders. And the the chest clip was against the baby's stomach, right above the crotch buckle.

So.... would you say something if you were me? I mean, part of me is ASSUMING that he just took the picture before fixing the straps, but I obviously don't know that for sure. I know it's not really my business, but I just can't get this picture out of my head and I'm sick with worry over the baby. If they were to get into an accident with his straps how they are in the picture, I'm not even sure they would keep him in the car seat, that's how loose they are!

So... what would you do?
