My doc and RE recommended clomid to have a stronger ovulation. We got pregnant on the second round and cycle 12.

Thank you all for the responses. I know I need to find a new doctor, but the choice ultimately comes down to me, so I wasn't in too much of a rush yet. Any OB can prescribe it if I wanted it. I've had my blood work done at 3 and after ovulation, and a few other random times, and they all came back 'normal'. I do need to get my husband to do a SA and probably an HSG first though before I should decide I guess.

I can't believe your doctor won't listen to you?? I had really irregular cycles coming off BC, but I did ovulate as well. When i went to my dr about it, she ordered a test for me to see if i did ovulate, then once that was confirmed, she suggested herself that i might possibly find clomid useful since the long cycles are lessening the chance of conception (I mean fewer chances than most people get, since my 1 cycle might equal someone's 2 cycles). I never got to go on it because of surgery i had to have then got pregnant on an off cycle (ended due to MC) but I'm definitely going to reconsider it once my cycles comes back (still recovering from the MC). My doctor did say that while it's mostly prescribed for people with anovulatory cycles, it could also work as a "booster" for ovulation. Can you see a new doctor who could explain this to you better??

@PurplePumps: I had a similar situation, my dr said I wasn't ovulating (based on a low progesterone blood test) even though my charts were pretty much textbook (big rise, etc). My biggest problem was that my LP was like, 8-9 days (hence the low progesterone). Clomid can make you ovulate more than one egg, and ovulate sooner in your cycle. I normally ovulate around day 18-20, and with 50mg Clomid that didn't change, but with 100mg Clomid I've been ovulating on day 14/15. It's the generic "first step" that doctors use, but I think that it's worth getting a second opinion. Before I started the Clomid I went to an RE (at 11 months TTC) and he said for sure I was ovulating, and that Clomid could just help me ovulate stronger/more eggs.

ETA: I've had no side effects on Clomid, but everyone's different.

I would say it depends on how old you are, and how impatient you are. I've seen people have a lot of success with naturopaths, but it can take a LONG time. But if you want to fix the source of the issue, that's a good way to go.

Personally, I was just about addressing the problem, not the cause. I was also 34 and would like to have 2 children. So I went to an RE when I wasn't ovulating, tried out a few different medications, and after 4 cycles (5.5 months) I'm 32 weeks pregnant.

I didn't have too many issues with Clomid, but it also wasn't super effective for me. I did much better on Femara and zero side effects. I am perfectly happy with the course I chose, it's what worked for me.

I would agree with a PP though, that at the very least you should switch doctors. Your doctor doesn't sound very informed and you should have someone that listens to you.

I think you should find a new doctor. Clomid might be the best thing for you, but it sounds like your doctor isn't really working to find out why you are ovulating late. I ovulate regularly now that I take metformin, but I have cycles similar to yours when I am not taking the met. Right now I am on clomid combined with an IUI just to increase my chances of getting pregnant with the IUI.

Clomid is rough for me. I really struggle with the side effects, but that's just me. My friend is on it as well and doesn't have too many problems with side effects at all. I think everyone is different. Good luck to you!!!

I'm sorry you're dealing with that doctor! If you feel it's time to do something, I would encourage you to first find a new doc. Is this your OB/GYN or RE?

Before taking drugs, I think they should test to try to see what might be going on. What's the point of you taking serious drugs if it's actually a low sperm count that is your challenge?

I ovulate on my own and have regular cycles usually between 30-31 days. I am currently taking fertility drugs though (Femara). The reason my RE is doing this is simply to increase my chances of getting pregnant--last cycle the ultrasound showed I ovulated with two eggs, so there's double the chance of getting pregnant. The egg quality doesn't change. I did ovulate a little earlier on Femara, lengthening my luteal phase, but that wasn't a problem for me to begin with.

Could you see a different doctor for another opinion?

The first time I took Clomid I had no side effects. My second cycle on it I experienced bad mood swings for about a week. So far without Clomid I don't ovulate at all.

I had very irregular periods coming off BC too. I was not ovulating, though. I went quickly to clomid and successfully ovulated and eventually conceived on it. It was not a fun drug to take, but it was very worth it for me. I'd personally find a doctor you like better and see what they think.

I've heard pretty rough things about clomid, so if you're already anti-drug, I wouldn't rush into it yet. Especially if your doctor is useless. I've had good luck working with my naturopath, that might be worth a shot?

Before BC (which I only took for about 2 years), my cycles were always typically 35-42 days. After stopping BC last Sept, my cycles were 93, 41, 98, 43, 36, and 40 days. I stopped BC and we started TTC right away, but I feel we only could actually "really" start trying the last 3 cycles, since those were actually normal cycles. I know that 3 cycles or more is not out of the ordinary, so that's why I'm unsure. But it's also been a year, and I'm starting to feel like we should do *something*. I do ovulate, on my own, it just take a while. I'm typically pretty anti drug, so part of me wants to continue to let nature try to do it's thing. Would you continue to try naturally, or use some medical intervention.

My doctor has been worthless. She was telling me I wasn't ovulating and wouldn't listen to me about my charts and how I was sure I was. I had to convince her to order a blood test for me last cycle at CD28 to prove I was ovulating even though she kept telling me it'd be too late for a blood test and that since my cycles are so long it meant I wasn't ovulating and that I was just eventually bleeding, so she's been trying to tell me I NEEDED Clomid to O, which I dont.

I've also heard that even some people who do O on their own have needed Clomid to have "stronger ovulation"? Does anyone have any experience with this scenario?
