I agree with @LazyLightning. I think you need to decide for yourself what the supervisor is like. It sounds like the new job would be a much better fit, and a much more pleasant experience. Besides, you might find out that you weirdly get along with the new supervisor! This has happened to me in the past where I have been warned about so-and-so, but in the end we ended up getting along fantastically, even if said person was kind of a hard ass.

I would take the new job, it sounds great! Every job will have something you won't particularly enjoy.

I'd take it! You have to make up your own mind about the supervisor, I don't think that's something you can glean from what other people say (as our preferences of whether we like someone are way different). If you are a good worker and enjoy your work, a crabby boss is OK (provided she isn't totally unfair and stirring up trouble for you).

I agree with Blackbird. I would speak more to others about what's so horrible about this possible new supervisor. My last boss was horrible in many ways, but if you did your work, an gave her what she needed, she pretty much left you alone. Some people need a boss that's always cheery and nice, but if there are other benefits to this position it might be worth it. I would find out more. Good luck with everything!

I would take the new gig if they made me an offer! Despite what everyone has said about your potential new supervisor, you could end up getting along with him/her well, you never know! And it sounds like all the pro's would outweigh that one thing, hands down.

@mrsjazz: I'd move! The drawbacks of an annoying supervisor dont compare to the disadvantages you've said at your current job. Sounds like a great opportunity and at least you have a heads up about the supervisor.

Take it. All other things being a great opportunity, you can't let one person ruin it based on hearsay. Your career path is more important than one grump. (Assuming he/she can't put a road block in it somehow.)

I'd take the new job and then leverage the work you do to position yourself for a better spot in a couple of years.

Honestly, you have only "heard" that people dislike her. But do you know why? Is she straight up a bitch, or does she micromanage? Does she just expect a lot from her employees? Are a lot of her employees incompetent? There could be a LOT of factors!

It sounds like your current position sucks and has zero good things going for it. The new one has a few things going for it. It can't be 100% awesome, but it sounds like it's at least a better step for your career.

@mrsjazz: If things are really that bad and everyone is unhappy, maybe it is time to get out. If there is only one person at your new job that people have had negative comments about, maybe it won't be so bad. And, who knows, maybe they are wrong!

I guess you can always leave if it doesn't work out!

@mrsjazz: my main concern would be if your superviser blames you for something and gets you fired.

I would do it tho! And then immediately start making friends to secure the social capital you need if something goes down!!

@tlcbaby: Work environment is huge for me, too. I love my current department co-workers, but no one else. Morale here is really low though. Everyone in my department is looking for a new job--including my supervisor. We all talk about how much we hate this place and it's sad. But I agree, I don't want to just take any job because I don't like this place.

@BabyBoecksMom: No, I wouldn't be able to move out from under the supervisor at the new position--the department is basically the supervisor, me, and some interns/consultants who aren't there on a daily basis.

@mrbee: Thanks! I think I have a tolerance for lame people--it just depends on how mean she is and I won't really know that until I'm in the position.

I think it's a no brainier - make the move!! People come and go at companies - gotta make the decision based on your job role and the benefits. Don't turn a job down, when this may only be your supervisor for a small period of your time there

I would take the new job if offered, but I don't mind working for ahem..."difficult" people. It's something I have a lot of experience with, and my feathers are not easily ruffled. If you easily take things personally or to heart, maybe having a difficult boss wouldn't be good - but it sounds like such a good opportunity! I personally wouldn't pass it up if the only issue is the boss.

That's at really tough decision. Would you have the opportunity to move out from under that manager after a certain amount of time?

I think I would try to go with the other company even though the boss wouldn't be ideal.

Decisions like this are so tough! Honestly, work environment is huge to me and it is scary to leave a job that you at least have history with for another job that you may not like because of the people. If you feel you can stand to stay there a bit longer, I would consider to continue the search. If you make a switch, you want to be really sure it is a good decision and a place you could stay for a while!

I do not like my current job--haven't liked it for a while. It's been really tough here the past couple of years and we recently found out it's going to get tougher--we have a large deficit to make up for. We haven't had raises in 4 years and the small bonus they gave us to make up for the lack of salary increase has now been axed. Also, I don't *believe* in what I'm doing, I don't care anymore.

I've been actively interviewing and my supervisor knows. I have made it to the final round for a position at a great organization my supervisor used to work for. Doing the same thing I'm doing now, but I'd get more duties/managerial experience and international experience. More money, (not a lot more, but more, a compressed work week (out early on Fridays all year long), great benefits, back-up childcare, and the possibility of working from home a few days after being employed there for a year.

(This is turning into a novel). The downside--I've heard that the person who would be my direct supervisor is not pleasant and people don't like her. I've heard this from my supervisor and another friend who worked at this organization. But they all say that getting in at this organization would be great.

I have to weigh whether staying at a struggling organization doing a job I don't necessarily like vs. going to a great organization w/ good benefits but my direct supervisor may be a meanie.

What would you do? Stay at the current job. Take the new job if offered? Or keep looking? Any advice?
