@mrbee: nothing ever happened. I didn't see her for a while after I posted this and then I figured since nothing happened it must have blown over. They have since moved to the burbs and found a new nanny out there.

I know this is an old thread, but as someone who had a nanny quit with no notice, TELL HER!! Oh man were we left in a bind. She waited until we got home on a Tuesday night too, so we had work the next day and everything. The worst part is she expected us to hire her back and be a reference!

I see the argument for not telling, but she can draw her own conclusion from the information and maybe at least research daycares in advance!

I agree with Mrs. Bird. this 'information' went through five people to get to you. It is a rumor/gossip and may not be very valid. You could cause more damage than anything else by telling your friend.

I wouldn't. They should have an agreement about terminating the work contact that spells out terms for each party. Maybe she just said, 'ugh it's been such a long week, I wish I worked less hours' and that got turned into something much bigger. It could really make life suck for both of them if she's really dependent on her nanny and her nanny is really depending on her for a job and someone planted that seed in their heads that one was going to leave. People look on job listing web sites all the time or complain to their friends about their jobs, doesnt always mean anything.

Yes I would tell her. But I would make it very clear that you aren't sure how reliable the info is since it went through a long chain of people but you wanted her to know because you didn't want her to be left in a bind.

If heard through the grapevine that your close friend's nanny was looking for a new job, and you were pretty sure your friend was not aware of this and really relies on the nanny, would you tell her?

I found out in a really long windy way-- the nanny told her friend who nannies for my sister's friend, who told my sister who told me. Apparently she wants something with shorter hours, but I wouldn't want my friend to be left in a major bind. She and her husband do not have flexible schedules.
