@nanilani: My kids are stomach sleepers too. We were able to teach our oldest to put his blanket on by having him stand up and wrap the blanket around himself like a cape and then lay back down. Good luck to you!

My son did this at bedtime - he'd ask me to fix the blanket like 20 times until he fell asleep. And then he'd kick it off again in his sleep, and be cold. We tried blankets that are bigger and/or heavier (so they don't kick off so easily), plus warm jammies and socks. That helped.

@Adira: I think that's the issue. We've certainly encouraged him to cover himself many times before and have tried making a game of it outside of bedtime, but we had no success until my husband secretly assisted him last night in hopes it would build his confidence to try again on his own. Part of the problem is probably that he's a stomach sleeper, and the backhanded motion needed to pull up the blanket seems a bit more challenging than pulling it up to his chin would be.

Is the issue that he can't figure out how to get the blanket back on himself in the middle of the night? If that's the case, I might try forcing him to learn how to do it himself - instead of you tucking him in at night, have him do it himself so that he knows how to do it. That way if he wakes up in the middle of the night, he should be able to do it himself. He might also need a little night light or something so he can see what he's doing. Might take a few nights, but once you're positive he can do it himself, you just reiterate that in the middle of the night and eventually he'll just do it himself, maybe?

This is one of the reasons we are moving to a twin bed. In fact last night DD ended up in our bed because she was cold. We’ve tried everything including massive blankets but she moves too much for them to stay on. At least with a twin you can really tuck the blankets in.

@Ms. RV: @gingerbebe: Thanks for the product recs! We do have a sleeping bag that came with an indoor tent set, but I never really considered using it in his crib. It'd probably be worth a shot before buying new bedding.

By some miracle, DS only whined for help once last night shortly after being put down and then was quiet the rest of the night. Here's hoping it's not a fluke!! Apparently when DH went in to help him, he asked DS if he could try to cover himself up and then discreetly helped so DS might believe he did it all on his own. I have no idea if that helped with the full night of sleep or it was just a coincidence.

@gingerbebe: yes that’s the one I was thinking of when @Ms. RV: posted! They are expensive but look really neat.
But I do think a sleeping bag might be same concept! I wonder if you can even attach the sleeping bag to a cheap fitted crib sheet so it’s truly like the Beddy’s!

I found these things the other day... they are comforters that are fitted on one end to help hold them on better. I don't have one for DD yet, but she might be asking for one for Christmas from Grandma

Delta Children Reversible Boys Toddler 4 Piece Bedding Set (Fitted Sheet, Flat Top Sheet w/ Elastic bottom, Fitted Comforter w/ Elastic bottom, Standard Pillowcase) Boys Starry Night | Blue Stars https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MCTC5J5/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_ax0eAb8WSYBMJ

ETA: I bet if you used a comforter or a large enough blanket, you could fold the ends under the mattress and use sheet suspenders for the same effect.

@SweetiePie: He's had a blanket in his crib maybe 3 or 4 weeks now. And the first week or so was fine. Then we blamed the sleep disruption on the time change. Now I'm pretty positive it's the blanket since covering him up is the only sure fire way to get him back to sleep.

We had a really easy time getting rid of the swaddle and pacis from what I remember, but he was so little then and much less opinionated! Not to say that the change itself isn't the (hopefully temporary) issue.

I am having sort of the opposite problem where I WISH my 2yo would figure out how to stay underneath a blanket at night! We have to keep it so warm at night so he doesn't get cold and wake up because he won't sleep under a blanket. Of course, he has to sleep with his 5,000 stuffed animals and two A&A blankets - but he just cuddles with them.

I'd been very in favor of moving him to a toddler bed when his sleep was near perfect (with the ulterior motive of having the crib free for his new sibling next year), but DH is pessimistic about it and the past few weeks have seriously hurt my case!

@SweetiePie: He hasn't used anything in a long time. He was in sleepsacks when he was younger, but I don't even remember if we used them last winter. Now we just make sure he's wearing footie pjs or socks in the winter, and we don't turn the heat way down at night. We have tried a larger blanket (although not as large as a twin), and now he thinks he needs both blankets. Ugh. It's turned into an awful sleep crutch, albeit one he'll end up needing to use eventually.

Ha this brought back memories as I posted about this a few years ago for my DD! There were some good ideas in here:
http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/toddler-screaming-when-blankets-fall-off

What ultimately worked for us though was switching to a big kid bed with an oversized blanket. She wouldn't accept a new bigger blanket in the crib (because she is SO stubborn)

Good luck!

We did the same...added a blanket on top of a thin sleep sack. He’s had his blanket for about a year now and some nights he wants his sleep sack, others he doesn’t. Might be worth trying.

What did he use before the blanket?
We were in a sleep sack until almost 3. We started using a thin blanket on top of the sleep sack so he’d get used to it around 2. By the time we took him out of the sleep sack he was very used to the blanket and it mostly stayed on him.

Also, maybe a bigger blanket? You don’t need to worry much about hazard at this point so if you can maybe do a twin sized blanket that would probably stay on better.

My 2yo recently started sleeping with a blanket in his crib, and it seems to have started some new sleep issues. He went from 100% STTN virtually every night to crying every time he wakes up uncovered (usually 2-4 times a night, although some happen before we're in bed ourselves). We've tried waiting him out to see if he figures it out before going in to cover him again, but 30+ minutes of whining at 4am is hard to take when you have to be up at 5:15! Apparently he manages his own blanket just fine during naps at daycare, go figure.

What would you do? Do you have any tricks for keeping a blanket in place? (I know he won't stay still while sleeping until he's older.) Would you try some sort of remedial sleep training while letting him have the blanket? Or just just hide all the blankets in the house until he forgets about it? Could we be dealing with some sort of normal sleep regression that just happened to coincide with introducing the blanket?

Warmth is not the issue, he just likes being covered with it so I don't think a sleep sack will fix the problem. He's a bit of a hoarder in bed with several stuffed animals/books that he insists on sleeping on top of, everything needs to be just so!
