That would be a huge NO for me. Like, if this were still early in the pregnancy, I'd be finding a new doctor level of nope. I hope you're right that he's just assuming that's what you'd want, but I would definitely stick to my guns!

@matador84: nope. There are 3 other doctors in the practice! But he used to own the practice himself but the hospital bought him out a few years ago, so he's kind of the head guy. I'm glad I'm not the only one that sees it as crazy!

That's weird. Does he practice alone? Even though my OB is in a solo office, he still rotates call with two or three other doctors, so if he is on vacation, one of them deliver. I had DS right before a holiday and DD a week before he went on vacation, so I knew this was a possibility he wouldn't deliver me (he did end up doing it), but I would NOT have wanted an induction earlier than 40 at the earliest.

Wow I'm shocked he would even suggest such a thing! I would just say you don't feel comfortable being induced and you are totally fine with the on call doctor.

That is crazy. I was a 0, no progress at my 39 wk appt and then my water broke at 39+3 and was a 6 as soon as I got to the hospital. Who knows if that could be you if he insists on the 39+2!! I say stick to your guns!

I would practice saying no loudly and firmly. No. No, I will not be induced unless there is a medical indication for it. No no no. I would take your partner, a parent, or a loud mouthed friend along to help you to be firm in case the doc tries to push the point.

ETA: it's not a bad history he's just pushy and has a history if being late a lot and once didn't even show up (he did not have a personal emergency, we discussed it)

On the flip side, he may assume that you would prefer HE deliver you a little early rather than someone you've never met

I'd just say you, you aren't comfortable with that, and ask who his back up OB is. Or you'll deliver with the on call attending

unless it's medically indicated, say no. while there may be a chance he won't be there, someone else will be and then you have the chance to go into labor naturally. good luck! it's hard when doctors push their way and you don't agree.

Also, I think there are valid risks with elective induction (more likely to end up with c section if your body isn't ready for example) so if you would feel more prepared, do a little googling so you have facts to back up your feelings.

@Mrs. Deer: I'll be 39+2 on Friday. It makes me really mad that he's doing just for convenience and yes, there will be someone there to cover him while he's gone.

I did the panorama test because he pressured me into. Again, another thing that's not a huge deal but I don't know why he won't drop it when I say no.

@Mrs. Sunshine: I would just tell him that you will not have an induction unless it is medically indicated (concerns for you and the baby). I assume you are comfortable with whoever his back up is if he is out of town. You may want to validate that you would love to have him deliver but that you have xx concerns about elective inductions if he pushes.

Some people are fine with inductions and some people really want their familiar doctor to do the delivery, so he may just be assuming you are in one of these boats. Good luck!

This is hard! Honestly, I would feel so uncomfortable being induced just for schedule's sake. I would let him know that without a medical reason for being induced early, you don't feel comfortable with it. Be up front, and just let him know that its not what you'd like. What are your other options? Do you know the doctor that will be taking his patients while he's away?

How far along will you be on the 17th? I think being induced for convenience is ridiculous! I know it can sometimes be hard to stand up to a doctor, but I would tell him you're sorry but you're not comfortable with being induced. Is there another OB in the practice who will be covering for them?

*I had no idea where to put this, feel free to move it!*

Apparently my OB will be out of town a lot around my due date (the 23rd) so he wants to induce me on Friday (the 17th). He told me this last week when I had a cervical check and was dialated 1 cm. I was induced with DD1 and would like to avoid it if possible this time (just because I'd like a different experience). There is no medical reason To induce me right now. I said as much to him last week and he said that he wants to see what kind of progress I'm making in a week (which would be tomorrow) and we'll discuss it then. Based on my history with him I really think he's going to push the issue with me which makes me mad. Barring that LO doesn't show up tonight, I need to find a way to say no if/when the induction gets brought up at my appointment. What would you say or do to make it clear that this is something you don't want and he's crossing a line for pushing it just to make us fit his schedule?
