@mrsmenow: Thanks! I HOPE Xander's not allergic to soy because it seems like that would be a good substitute if he can have it! I'll have to check out Yummly! And probably learn how to cook... haha

MrsJacks posts were so helpful when DD was diagnosed with a dairy allergy. MSPImom is a good site too.

It seems daunting at first, but it seems like dairy allergies are pretty common and there is a lot of great information out there. Once you get the basics of what you can eat, substitutions, etc. it isn't so bad. DD was diagnosed around 6 weeks and is now almost 11 months and it seems like second nature now. Yummly is a great site because you can search for a recipe and add in allergies. Tonight I made a chicken pot pie (dairy free) that I found a couple of weeks ago on there and it was so good. Good luck!

@Adira: Sorry to hear! If there's one thing I've learned from MSPI cooking (for 9 months now) is that it's better to avoid the "replacements" and just cook things that are naturally dairy-free. If you need meal ideas let me know...I've pretty much had to revamp everything we eat... :/

oh friend. I've been there! I eliminated dairy from months 3-7 and he grew out of it. Honestly, after you get used to it it really isn't SO bad. On the plus side, I weigh less than I did in college and it made me eat VERY healthy. Lots of salads, oatmeal, avocados, fruit, pasta salads with vinagarette base, grilled meats with veggies....Happy thoughts. You can do this. Xander is going to be okay!

Poor Xander! I'm glad you guys figured out the cause of his allergies though. Noelle had eczema when I was breastfeeding her too, and I do think it's because she had a peanut allergy that I didn't realize at the time. Her eczema miraculously disappeared soon after we stopped breastfeeding - I wish I had known at the time!

@Adira: On your comment about never tasting cow's milk and not knowing what he's missing - I've always had a peanut allergy and have only had peanuts/PB a few times in my life, all of which ended badly. Same with coconut! So somehow I've developed a strong aversion to those smells. I hope Xander never has those experiences, but it's possible he won't grow up wishing he could have some milk!

Daiya cheese is great. Almond milk and coconut milk are great alternatives as well. It really isn't as hard as it seems. My son LOVED coconut milk yogurt. There are a lot of soy alternatives that are available in most stores.

Some things to watch out for: McDonald's fries are dipped in milk to make them crispy. So no fries for him.

We just found out N has an extremely mild allergy to dairy. DH and I are dairy free anyway so it isn't a huge deal for us. N loves rice crèmes, they are completely dairy free. They have a lot of alternatives out there to dairy.

@Corduroy: Based on his reactions, he was only tested for an allergy to milk. It's a skin test where they picked his back with a control, histamine, and the milk to gauge his reactions. Xander found it mildly unpleasant, but wasn't overly bothered by it. Other children react more strongly.

Also, eggs is one of those foods that contain histamine-like substances, so it's entirely possible to have a reaction due to eggs, but not be allergic! Good luck to you!

@MamaJ: Thanks! I did e-mail all the grandparents and siblings, but I'll have to make sure everyone is aware when we're with other people! Or just not leave Xander alone with anyone ever!! :)

I buy daiya cheese for DS and he loves it. It's pretty pricey though. The hardest for us is dining out. Today I met DH for lunch and microwaved a veggie burger for DS before we left and fed that to him.

Also make it known to everyone in your family. And don't be afraid to repeat it. Someone slipped DS dairy and I was pissed. They didn't know but they also didn't ask if he could have the said food either and I wasn't nearby.

I made the appointment because of an egg reaction but I wonder if she has dairy-related eczema as well. Was Xander tested for several allergens?

@Adira: Hugs mama!! All the PP's have great suggestions, and I agree that there is no good dairy free cheese, though Rice Parmesan isn't awful when it's mixed in things.

I would spend some time on the nutritional info sections from some of your fave restaurants and make up a list of 'safe' foods. We did a lot of traveling when I was on an MSPI diet for DD and having a list of 'go to' foods from various restaurants was super helpful. We ended up eating at a lot of chain restaurants just because they have useful websites.
