@Raindrop: Wow, really??? I had no idea about the contacts, but I rarely wear mine! That's crazy!! And the chapstick thing is okay - I end up just using a little vaseline instead which works great. I just keep getting afraid I might develop an allergy to vaseline now!

@Adira: Oh I'm sorry to hear! That sucks especially when your lips are chapped!

The body is pretty weird... one of my friends... her eye rejected her contacts and she had to do laser eye surgery or wear glasses again. She was in her late-20s when it happened and her eye doctor told her it was actually pretty common for women's eyes to reject contacts around that time. What? That was news to me!

@Raindrop: It's crazy how you can develop allergies and grow out of allergies! I recently developed a skin allergy to... actually, I don't even know, but I can no longer use chapstick because my lips swell up and get itchy!

@Adira: LOL you keep reminding me of me! When I was little I was allergic to way different things than I am now. I believe I was allergic to Chocolate, nuts, seafood and a few other things (not all a the same time) which I did out grow and change to other allergies. I thought I was the only one... but someone I meet in college also changed allergies about every 3 or so years too. Though my current ones I have had for 10+ years now... it stabilized during college.

DD had reaction to the milk based formula when she was 4 month. She did have hives, red faces and scratching faces but no breathing issue. We didn't go through test but pedi recommended to go with hydrolyzed formula and she did fine. At 9 month, pedi advised us to try regular formula and eventually regular whole milk gradually. She did have some hives and redness during first several months she started whole milk but no breathing problem...

Eventually that went away. Now 19 month, she eats milk, yogurt, cheese and other dairy varieties fine. Hope it turns our okay with Xander, too!

@keepcalmcarrie: i promise it isn't horrible! i was on a dairy soy free diet for a year and then just dairy free for an additional year. plus side was that i looked really great - lost all the baby weight and then some. downside was that there was no cake and i really love my sweets ha!

@catlady: I think different allergists do different things, so I'm curious what your allergist ends up doing! It seems like doing a panel of skin pricks is pretty common, but our allergist only tests for specific things when there is a reason to suspect there is an allergy for it (since Xander reacted to both yogurt and milk-based formula, he just tested for a milk allergy to basically confirm it). I hope your appointment in January is helpful and informative!

This is interesting about the false positives. We have an allergy test coming up in Jan for LO. We don't know the extent of her allergies and I was hoping they'd do a battery of tests so we'd know. The only thing we suspect as an actual allergy is eggs, but I'm pretty sure she's still MSPI and I'm worried about nuts too. I'm still nursing and still avoiding those things in my diet (weirdly, eggs are fine for me). We have the epi pen but I don't want to have to use it so there are many things I haven't given to her yet.

Good luck to Xander (and baby #2)!

@Raindrop: I'm actually hoping that if baby #2 DOES have allergies, he's allergic to milk too, so I can feed them both the same things! I'm worried he'll be allergic to something completely different (like you and your LO) and it'll totally throw me off!!!

@Adira: Allergies are so weird!

My allergies are legumes (beans/peanuts) and critic acid (I call this the sour stuff, but it's also vitamin C). My reaction is mild... I don't need an epi pen... I just break out into hives for about 4-6 hours after I eat a lot of either allergies... if I just have a bite... it's a mild reaction/no reaction.

LO is allergic to shellfish... well at the very least shrimp. He can actually have things cooked with it but if he actually eats a bite of shrimp... he's whole back breaks out for a day or two and it's ichy but he can't reach it!

He is perfectly fine with peanut butter (well held off till he was over 2 to try but he was fine) and sour things like lemons and oranges. I'm fine with shell fish! So we have completely different allergies. :)

It has gotten easier, though, and at our follow up yesterday, we learned that it is working!!! She is now in the 46% for weight and no blood in her stool. that makes it so worth it!

Sorry I didn't read the responses but to your original post.

I'm the second kid of my parents... my parents have no allergies and my brother doesn't have allergies but I do!

My uncle on my dad's side is the 4th kid of 5 and he's the only one of his siblings that have allergies. My family is weird and once or twice in my life they joked I was his kid and not my dads.

So there is hope that LO 2 might not have allergies! :)

@LovelyPlum: Yes! We get a ton of Vegan stuff because it's safe for Xander! I don't even know what we'd do if we had to deal with soy... really hoping baby #2 doesn't have even more allergies. Also, you're a saint for being on such an elimination diet for your LO (it's for your LO right, not because you yourself are allergic?)!

@Adira: yes, avoiding both sucks. At least with dairy, you can go for vegan things and know they're safe. A lot of vegan is out for me, unfortunately. Can't wait to kick this soy (and milk, and beef, and wheat) allergy!

@keepcalmcarrie: Yeah, I say now that I would just use formula, but I was sooooooo stubborn about being able to breastfeed, so I probably would try an elimination diet! I'd just start eating/drinking all of Xander's food, haha. And the money aspect is a good point. Although having Hubs be able to do some of the feedings also sounds REALLY nice!

But hopefully we'll both get lucky and not have more allergies to deal with with our second babies!

@Adira: @keepcalmcarrie: just wanted to chime in and say that dairy free isn't so bad! I've been on it for 6 months, and I have gotten pretty used to it. Soy free is way more of a PITA, but neither are the end of the world. Hopefully, you get to avoid it altogether, though!

@Adira: I think I would probably just go on an elimination diet for the first few months so I could breastfeed - I wouldn't be willing to do it for a year! The reasons are a combination of being cheap and being vain - Alimentum was SO expensive, I can't imagine prepping the amount of bottles a newborn consumes (one of the best parts of breastfeeding for me was the convenience!), and I really did lose the baby weight from nursing, so I want to do that again and cutting out dairy would probably make it even more effective. Miserable, but effective ;)

Hopefully an allergy isn't something either of us have to deal with again anyway!

@LuLu Mom: That's a good point about continuing to give it once you introduce it if there is no reaction! I will keep that in mind when I introduce peanut butter and fish (not at the same time, gross...)!

@littlebittyhouse: Xander has had milk in highly processed foods because our daycare hasn't always been careful (Thomas english muffins, Fig Newtons, etc) and hasn't had a response to those, so I'm HOPING he'll be okay with baked goods, but we'll wait for our allergist to tell us to do that or not!

Surprisingly for us, despite Xander's allergy to milk, I never had to change my diet when I was nursing him! So I'm hoping that even if baby #2 has similar allergies, I can continue to nurse him without changing my diet!! Guess we'll find out soon!!

@keepcalmcarrie: I'm REALLY hoping that if baby #2 is also allergic, I won't have to change my diet. I didn't have to with Xander despite him being so allergic to milk! I hope you won't have to change your diet for baby #2 either. I think I'd probably switch to formula rather than change my diet - I just don't think I have it in me! Although I guess I could always just eat whatever Xander normally eats since he's already dairy-free... As for whether he'll outgrow his allergy, we don't know yet. This blood test that we just had will give us some indication of his chances, so I'm excited for the results!

The closer I get to delivery (just a month behind you, @Adira:!) the more worried I am about a repeat milk allergy. J was SO colicky for the first 4 months, and once we figured out he had a MPA we just switched him to Alimentum rather than me giving up dairy and continuing to breastfeed. He outgrew it at 14 months - did they say if Xander is likely to outgrow it? This time around if LO#2 is allergic, I will probably try to restrict my diet and continue nursing, but I'm not excited about it. FX that your second little man is allergy free!

Our doctor said the same thing about false positive, until age 2, however still ran the test as a "just in case" type scenario. Our big one was the dog, to make sure she wasn't allergic to our indoor pet.

he did say that once we introduce stuff and see no reaction to continue to give it to her because it will help an allergy from forming (I was so worried with nuts, I would have the epi pen on the table at all times) but in the end she did great and we've been cleared!

The false positives thing is interesting. My little sister had a pretty bad tree nut allergy and isn't allergic to anything else. But as a kid, she got a false positive to shellfish (and avoided her whole life until she had a new test in her 20's and found out she wasn't allergic and now eats it all, no problems). And same thing happened with peanuts. She has eaten them her whole life with no issues, but the test in her 20's said she was allergic to them.

So, are you going to give Xander a PB&J?

In case anyone is curious, I figured I'd post about our follow-up appointment with the allergist!

Recap: At 7 months, we introduced Xander to yogurt and he had an anaphylaxic reaction: hives, scratching at his face, coughing, sneezing, wheezing, trouble breathing, followed by an ER trip and a prescription for an EpiPen. A week later, he was accidentally given a milk-based formula at daycare and broke out into hives. We saw an Allergist who did a skin prick test and confirmed he's allergic to milk.

It's been a year since his diagnosis! We saw the Allergist who reviewed his history. It was actually a pretty uneventful appointment. He had blood drawn to test for his milk allergy and we'll get the results in a couple weeks (our Allergist is out of town for the holidays and the following week). Depending on the results, the next step might be for me to bake something using milk products and then try giving it to Xander.

I asked about testing for other allergies, like peanuts or fish, because we still haven't introduced those things to Xander, but our Allergist is against doing that kind of testing. Apparently false positives are VERY common, so if the test came back negative, it would tell us that he's definitely not allergic, but if it came back positive, it wouldn't really tell us anything! He suggested just giving Xander any items and watching his reaction.

I asked about baby #2 and the doctor said that baby #2 has a high chance of also having allergies and asthma, just like Xander, but to not restrict his diet at all until we have reason to. So that's the plan!
