OMG. I LOVE having a yard sales. I post on craigslist and only do them like once every 6 years. Expensive clothes and stuff you can't really sell for much. So those are better to just give to friends. But other stuff, sell away! Good luck! Enjoy a bloody mary or mimosa while you are up that early!

@MaryM: oh, ok. Thanks! Yeah, I think some stuff I might post onto our Buy nothing group. Some of the things I don't care about money. I just want it gone.

@bluestriped bee: You might check restrictions where you're thinking of donating. DH just had to drive all over the county to find a place to take a box spring. And I don't think Goodwill wanted his old couch either. A lot of places are afraid of bedbugs.

@MaryM: oh, good idea. I think we'll probably donate it. Good idea on the shelter!

@bluestriped bee: Our second sale was a moving sale and we made enough to cover most of the gas for our moving truck from Texas to Wisconsin

@bluestriped bee: You might think ahead about what you want to do with anything that's leftover.

My house was already furnished when DH moved in and his furniture was well worn, but he was able to find a women's shelter that came after the yard sale to take a couch and a bed and a few other things.

@kiddosc: it will be pretty much a moving sale.

It really depends on what you're trying to sell. If you have a lot of good, like new items, then it can be worth having a rummage sale. If you're mostly trying to get rid of older, outdated or well used things, then it's not likely to be worth the effort. Furniture, toys, baby gear, and home decor will get people interested enough to come out to your sale specifically.

Take pictures of your nice items to include in any ad that you post and definitely do signs from main roads. The "professional" buyers come out early in the morning, so be ready. We've had two sales in the last 5 years and made a few hundred dollars at each, which was worth the effort to me.

Nope. It's not worth the time and effort. I itemize and donate and write off on takes. I occasionally will sell a high value or large item on CL.

We had decent turnout for the one we had before DH moved in with me. We posted to Craigslist and made signs to guide people from the main road.

Is there a neighborhood association? If so, see if you can post in their message board.

Have you had good experience on having a yard sale? Do you post about it on FB and Craigslist to get a good turnout?

Any other tips?
