M started to STTN at 3 weeks so I give it a HUGE Yay! I liked the DVD, DH read the book. We also used moms on call.

Didn't know there was a DVD, but the book was very helpful when LO was 6 weeks to 3 months. We did the 4 S's, because my DS was interested in sucking. It rarely put him to sleep but often calmed him down when he was colicky.

The white noise CD that comes with the book/dvd is outstanding - we play the 6th track on a loop for all of LO's naps and nights. We definitely used the 5 S's when C was a newborn. We actually got to meet Dr Karp - LO was his swaddling demo baby on TV when he was 9 weeks. He "sssh"'s SO loudly - it was unbelievable.

Yay! The DVD is much better than the book - you have to see it in action to understand just how to do it. When LO was very tiny, the shushing in her ear almost always calmed her. Try all 5 S's and see what works. The side thing never did much for her. Overall, though, I highly recommend.

yay! i can't say it was sooo useful in specifically teaching me the 5 Ss, but rather reading that book changed my perspective and parenting approach. For example, when L was born, i held beliefs such as you can "spoil" a baby by picking them up too much, so it's better to try to get them to sleep on their own (as in from day one). now i am big believer and practicer in babywearing.

Yes - We read the book. I wouldn't say it was a miracle but my husband really was able to swaddle, sway, and shoosh, and she would go down almost every time for him.

Yay! Worked for us :) You can find it for cheap in most used book stores pretty easily. The book does repeat itself a lot, it could state everything once and be 50% shorter. Haven't seen the movie, but I've heard it's a great shortcut.

I'd go for the DVD (no time to read a book with a newborn). We had a colicky baby who was very difficult to soothe. While it's not magic, it's empowering to feel like you've got some tools to use.

Interesting enough but it felt like a lot of "fluff" to make it a whole book. I could have skimmed it and read what the "5s's" were and could have gotten the same out of it.

I read the book and liked it. I liked the idea/reasoning behind the 4th trimester. We didn't do a whole lot with it after our son was born, because he wasn't a very fussy baby. We used swaddle sacks, jiggling, and side-lying (he still loves side-lying and will knock right out when we do it!). We didn't ever use a white noise machine, but did some loud shushing & it seemed to calm him down.

There's a lot more in the book than just the 5 s's that I think is worth the time reading through. I wish my husband read it before our LO was born, I think it would have helped him a lot more in the first few weeks.
