I love both, of course, but for different reasons. The musical is a classic, and having the performances happen right there in front of you is magic that you can't replace with anything else. But it is easy to get kinda lost in the story because everything happens really fast.</p> <p>What I liked about the movie a lot is that it's much easier to follow the complicated story because you can see the dynamics between the characters in certain scenes that really make it come alive. The acting is also superb - the sad scenes really made me cry, but in the live musical, not so much. </p> <p>If you go to see the musical, I'd definitely get there early to read the synopsis in the Playbill. I didn't like it. I think Russell Crowe was a bad choice for Javert. He's a tenor and Javert is not. Made his songs sound wimpy without those low notes. My other gripe was that they didn't take advantage if it being a movie. They could have been so much more grand, but most of the time the camera was trained on a face while they sang their song. I saw it on Broadway ages ago, and I definitely missed some of the more subtle things which I was able to get better in the movie (well, probably because I'm like 15 years older). I was really impressed with some of the a-listers-- especially Anne Hathaway and of course Hugh Jackman.
