So many wonderful ideas! For DD's ornament, she's only 18m so I'd need to pick something for her.

I think I'll try and grab her a butterfly; her favorite book (as in picks it EVERY SINGLE NIGHT before bed) is "Take Heart, My Child", and the first little bit mentions "a butterfly sea". Plus, she's gone through so many changes this year, I think it's really appropriate! Thank you everyone for your ideas!

Keep them coming, btw! I'll almost certainly reference this thread again next year lol

I pick an ornament each year for DS that reminds me of him in some way. I try to find something that's glass that a future daughter in law won't mind putting on her tree lol. Here's what I've gotten so far...
1 - First Christmas engraved crystal ball ornament.
2 - Felt salt and pepper shakers, DS was obsessed with putting "saul" on EVERYTHING he ate at that point
3 - An attractive, glass looking, BB8 from Star Wars, his remote control BB8 was his favorite toy
4 - A hand blow glass piece of Key Lime pie, I ordered a slice of key lime pie one night while we were on vacation to share, after he took the first bite his eyes lit up and he sternly told me "NO BIG BITES!"

I share the stories just to show that I didn't pick anything with major significance, just something that will provoke a fun memory of that age down the line.

We take the kids and let them pick out an ornament. The idea was that it would be related to something they were into, so B picked an Elsa ornament and W picked a bike, which...he was 1.5, but whatever.

We get an ornament each year for each child, including pregnancy. We pick ornaments that represent their likes at that time.
LO1: Rainbow for his first year because he was a rainbow baby, bus for the "Wheels on the bus" and this year a fireman
LO2: Buying a giraffe ornament and tying a Soothie pacifier to it, haha

We also bought an ornament for our miscarried baby. It is a sage colored stone with the year on it, and her/his name is Sage.

My mom always got me an ornament every year growing up they were important things from that year or something I particularly loved that year and I have continued this tradition for my husband (us as a family essentially) and now E. Some years I make them and some years I buy them and some years there are multiple. I have taken clear plastic balls and filled them with strips of our wedding invite or E's hat and bracelet from the hospital. I usually don't buy an ornament on a trip and have the place name but I have bought something after the fact that fits with the trip like a lobster made of bells symbolizing out Maine trip where we went to lobster fest. E's this year is a clay pea because I call her sweet pea.

what about nutcrackers? My aunt collected nutrackers for 30+ years, and it was an amazing collection.

I'm sure there are nutcracker ornaments with years on them, and all nutcrackers are slightly different!

We get an ornament every time we go on a trip for our tree and then I pick something for ds based on a milestone or interest that will someday go to him. Last year was a blue truck ornament since he LOVED the little blue truck and this year I’m either getting him a dog or zebra ornament since he is obsessed with both this year. I always get a glass one for him from old world Christmas

DD gets an ornament each year - for the past two years she has picked. For her first Christmas at two weeks old it was a baby's first Christmas. The following years were a first birthday cake with photo, then a little tikes slide, then she picked Daniel Tiger and Tigey, and this year she picked Daniel Tiger with Katerina. I love letting her pick them and we plan for her to have them one day when she has her own tree. (Even if it makes me a little sad to think about seeing them on my tree for 20ish years only to one day not have them there)

DH and I get them on years they naturally fit but we don't force it. We have photo ones from the first year we were together and the year we got married. One year we had moved to a new state and found an ornament that looked just the old fashioned movie theater we went to each week so we got that. Then we have two from the year DD was born - one that says "And baby makes three" and one that has her name, birth date, and stats on it. This year we bought a house so plan to get a first house ornament. I like that they have real meaning and we didn't just pick something just to say we did.

We started buying yearly ornaments that are reflections of things our kids love right now. So for example, this year my son got a mustache ornament (which totally fits him and his personality and style right now) and my daughter got an ice cream cone ornament. It's easier now that they have opinions and can help choose, but when they were really little, we chose for them. It's fun because I can look at each year and remember exactly why we bought that particular ornament.

I get my children a glass ornament each year that symbolizes something they loved at the time. This year they’re getting a butterfly, a rainbow and a truck (a la Little Blue Truck) respectively. I like that they’ll start their own trees with a collection of memories, but the blown glass keeps it looking adult enough for their trees down the road, hopefully.

We buy our kids ornaments every year based on their likes - sometimes its 2!

For instance last year DD started GS and she was a Daisy so I got her a Daisy ornament and she LOVES Barbie so she got that one too. This year she is a GS Brownie so I got her a Brownie one and once again a Barbie one.

DS got Tennis the year he tried that, Minecraft one year, Poop emoji another year....

As for us I get one every time we visit a new place - for instance this summer we went to the Grand Canyon so I got one there. If we didn't go anywhere new then we don't have a new one for that year.

@looch: A lot of the ornaments that are in consideration right now are snowflakes :) I LOVE the Lennox Optic Snowflake this year (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079XXX6X1/?coliid=I28KJJG976HFXA&colid=15Y0M5CXZDWGE&psc=0&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it) but not sure that I could convince DH.

I started a collection of snowflake ornaments for my son. He's a December baby, so I figured it's appropriate for the season and his birth month. I try to buy a different one every year, may it be made of ceramic, wood, metal, glass, etc.

I have a set of the sleigh bells, I would guess I have about 15 of them, it was begun as a collection when I was a kid and every once in a while, I add another to it.

I LOVE ornaments. I always buy ornaments from Old World Christmas. The kids get one that signify either important events in their lives or their interest. I get my husband one as well with the same criteria. I usually browse Amazon for inspiration (just search Old World Christmas Ornaments). With the plethora of options I've never had trouble picking one out.

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=old+world+christmas

I also buy a Reed & Barton holly bell every year - has the date on it and is gorgeous - for my LO2. They go on deal at Amazon in early December and you can grab one for cheap:

https://www.amazon.com/Reed-Barton-877593-Annual-Ornament/dp/B07DPF4Q7B/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1542387625&sr=8-1&keywords=reed+and+barton+holly+bell+2018

Every year, we buy a new ornament for our Christmas tree to highlight the big things in our lives from the previous year. I LOVE this tradition. We started it the year we got engaged (pictures of our 2 cats), the next year we were married (Family Name ornament), the next year we bought a house (First Home ornament), the next year we were pregnant (ultrasound ornament), the next year we had DD's first Christmas (picture frame ornament). This year has been wonderful in that we have had space and time to breath and just enjoy our lives, but honestly I have NO IDEA what to do for this year's ornament! I would like it to say the year on it, but it needs to be budget friendly. I've thought about doing a metal photo ornament from like, Shutterfly, but 2 of the previous ornaments I listed above are that and I'm just kind of over them. Any suggestions?

Also, last year I bought DD an ornament of the first letter of her first name (ala Young House Love), but I'm not sure I want to do that every year. Do you buy your kids an ornament for each year?
