@Andrea: Yeah...I did. Didn't let DH know what was going on, haha, I just handed him a sealed plain envelope to take to the doctor when he was going (lol...he still doesn't know what it was). Don't think I'd go through the trouble again though.

@Andrea: I've had to do the same one - 6x for one test! It really grossed me out, and it told them absolutely nothing. They were checking for ulcers, bleeding and something else that I don't remember. Gross, right?

Maybe the doctor recently decided to be more vigilant recently about this type of screening, so that's why they never asked your hubby to do it but now you. Have no idea really, but yes that's what it's for if it's on paper... to check for blood. Preventative care.

@PitBulLover: not yet but it is awful! i have just read the instructions now and i basically have to do this 6 times! 3 different bowel movements x 2 samples per movement.

this is too gross. i thought it would only be one time.

Yes, I've always had to do it since we've lived overseas. They test for something to do with iron, and also for parasites.
It's not fun, but it's fairly normal for international workers especially.

My husband actually has to do this for his yearly work physical. It's just to check for blood in your stool to see if you might have hemorrhoids or anything else going on.

@NYCaliMama: it's on a paper. he's been going there for years so i don't think they would have forgotten every time. maybe there was some mix up since the doctor made no mention of it but the nurse gave it to me right before i left. i should call before i do this, thanks!

are you putting the stool in a cup or smearing it on a card/paper?

if it's in a cup, perhaps they are sending it out for a stool culture (looking for abnormal bacteria, viruses, parasites). if it's on a card/paper, they are most likely just looking for occult blood.

The only reason I can think of that they gave it to you and not your hubby (assuming you both had absolutely normal visits/no complaints and they are doing this proactively), is that they forgot to give it to him and not to you.

@Andrea: I wonder if it's something they like to test for specifically in women then.

My hubby has crohns so he's had to do many stool samples... but I'm very bad and haven't gone to my primary in a long time so I wouldn't know.

My brother had to do this once because he had a very low iron level in his blood - they wanted to make sure there wasn't blood in his stool so they could rule out internal bleeding I think.

I just got back from my "yearly" physical (haven't had one in ages). At the end, they gave me an envelope to return at a later date.... with a sample of my feces. I've never ever been asked to do this before. I went to the same doctor that my husband has gone to. I called him after I left and he said he's never had to do this and he goes every year (such a good boy). My question is why would they test mine and not his???

ETA - I have no known health problems and the doctor thought I was fine during the exam.
