Yes, for fun we do. Especially the pets, their names evolve into something entirely off the wall. Our dog Danny has turned into just G. Short for Danny G, Ghetto dog from when we lived in a less than stellar neighborhood.

I already knew when we picked Cameron, that I would call him Cammy or Cam all the time. Somehow he has also turned into Booh-Bah, I have no idea how!

Other than that, none of our families are big nickname people. I was the only one growing up who had one- Cheska, part of a much longer italian version of my name.

I guess another point of view, I grew up with a nickname as a "real" name, I hated it!! I used to wish I had the full name just so I dind't have to correct people, most used to just assume my name was Jessica even thought it is just Jessie. Drove me bonkers! (Didn't help Jessica was top 3 the year I was born!)

@Grace: Nicknames as full names are my name pet peeve. I knew a girl named Jessie once, not Jessica, and for some reason it drove me crazy.

But, I love nick names. I never had one and always wanted one. When we talk baby names we always talk about the nickname options. I think it you truly don't want your kid to be nicknamed, you probably shouldn't give them a name that always is. It reminds me of the friends episode where Rachel tells the gang not to call her crush Josh. "It's Joshua." "What, he doesn't like Josh?" "No, I don't"

DH goes by the long version of a name that almost everyone shortens (Bradley - Brad). The name we are throwing around for a girl has a shortened version that we both like and will probably regularly use (Charlotte - Charlie)

I'm a nick-namer.

I loved the name Cobi - which I guess could be nickname or full name, but my husband thought it was too short. So we named him Jacobi, but we always call him Cobi. :)

We have a million other names for him, little love, buddy, pickle butt, pumpkin head, lovey, Coco, Coco bee, Ja-co-co, little man and the list goes on ;)

I love nicknames. Probably because I never had one growing up. You can't really make a nickname for my name and I always envied girls who got cool nicknames! My husband and I actually came up with names for our kids that would have cool nicknames.

DH goes by a shortened form of his birth name, I go by my birth name. LO goes by her birth name and DH corrects people who try to call her by a nickname. We however have pet names for her but tend to mostly use her given name except in informal written communications when we just refer to her by the first letter of her name (do the same thing with the dog though).

DH has always gone by the shortened form of his name (Ben) and as a child I used the shortened form of mine (Jess). Now the only people who call me Jess are DH, my sister, my childhood best friend and my mother because it seemed very "young" to me as I got older.

We will probably call Emma "Em" alot because of our families and their propensity for shortening names, but I would fully support her if she made the same choice I did and wanted to be called by her full name later on.

I have nicknames for virtually every person I love, so I'm sure our little ones will have a plethora of nicknames. I don't just shorten names though. As an example our dog's name is Roxie, but I call her Big Rox, Baby Rox, Baby Snack, Snack Pack, and Baby Beluga. I guess I'm just a nicknamer!

I don't care one way or another, I call my son by his first full name, or what he calls himself, which is a shortened version of his name. I don't call him the standard nickname, though, but I am sure that will happen when he goes to school.

Neither my name or DH's has an obvious nickname, so we go by our full name. My FIL is Max, not short for anything and it's a big trend around here to name your kid the nickname, like Mike or Kim, not Michael or Kimberly.

DH's name is one that is commonly shortened, like someone named Matthew being called Matt. My name has a common nickname, but I always refused to let people call me by it and made people use my full name (which my name is short and is already technically a nickname of another name so... yeah).

LO is Charlotte and there are some people who already call her Charlie. Neither DH nor I do though.

I kind of go crazy with nicknames...I never thought I would until I saw my son's cute chubby cheeks for the first time. I think I called him snickerdoodle for quite awhile. Even real nick names, I don't think are that bad either--as long as the full name is distinguished so they can use that in the professional world later on.
I do kind of have a pet peeve of guys who go by nick names that end in "y", most of them seem immature to me. Lol, DH goes by Ken or Kenneth but...he'll always be Kenny in my mind.
