I'd say he needs a burp! One thing you can do to help him not get too much is actually recline back a little while nursing so that less gushes into his mouth at once.

Sounds like gas and a classic case of baby gutsing himself until he overflows! Been there, done that, got the tshirt covered in baby spew!

If he's been nursing for 45 minutes then he probably isn't still hungry so I'd unlatch him and either offer a paci, provide some other activity or wrap him up and pop him in to bed.

Sounds like you and baby are really getting the hang of nursing now!!

@rahlyrah: my LO did this during a weigh-feed-weigh session with our LC and she suggested that he might be full but still wanting the comfort of sucking/snuggling and that he could just be annoyed that there was still milk coming out. We offered a paci and he accepted it and drifted off to dreamland all snuggled up and full. Does B take a paci? Maybe try that if he seems like he's just comfort nursing before the lion attack?

It sounds like things are going really well! :)

When my LO would do that I would take her off and try to burp her or just swaddle her up and give her to my husband and he'd shush her to sleep (or I'd shush her myself if he wasn't around). I agree with the others, he might just be getting tired but still half way wants to suckle for comfort but he'll get over it hopefully and just accept snuggles and drift off.

Yes mine did/does that. It usually means gas or tired. I take him off, burp and then offer again. If he does it again, I just take him off. He only does it at the end of feeding. You might want to get a scale so you can weigh him before and after feeding and then you'll be more confident it wasn't your supply. That helped me a lot. We bought a fairly cheap one from bru and it is accurate to our doctors.

Oh my goodness my LO does this too! This is why we use a shield 85% of the time... it feels like he's trying to rip my nipple off :( When he does this I usually unlatch him and burp him, but then he usually starts screaming and wants back on... and out comes the shield.

@JoJoGirl: That makes sense! He was doing the tongue flutter prior to the lion episode. I read the tongue flutter means they are falling asleep at the breast.

Another note, my LC said babies will sometimes have trouble latching if they are exhausted. If LO has been eating for a while and starts falling apart, I usually take that as a cue to put her to bed instead of continuing trying to keep feeding her.

My Lo totally does the lion prey thing- I'm going to think of that analogy next time! Just last night I had the same doubts about my supply but when I squeezed- I sprayed her right in the face like a boobie squirt gun. I usually burp her then and can usually but not always get a good one. I don't really know why she does it but I think it's normal.

I also try to unlatch her when she starts the shaking head thing since it hurts a lot when she yanks away!

If he's eating for 45 mins at a time, definitely burp him between each boob change! The fact that he spit it all back up means he probably had some gas.

You're not cluless!! BFing isnt easy and every baby and mama are different. You're doing great!

My LO does this when she has gas. Lol @ the lion analogy. That's exactly what it feels like. Try unlatching him when he starts and try to burp him.

I am so sorry that I keep bombarding this board with my questions! I promise I'll get the hang of things eventually.

B has been getting better with his latch (thanks to your tips!) and BFing is getting progressively smoother/less painful. He started doing something weird though...

After he has been nursing for a while he starts shaking his head back and forth like he is frustrated. Seriously, he is like a little lion ripping apart his prey. It ruins his latch and he clamps on my nip and it is insanely painful!

I worry about my supply, so I thought maybe my flow slows down too much. However, this morning I squeezed my boob after the head shaking extravaganza and a stream of milk squirted out. If it comes out like a squirt gun then I'm guessing my flow must be quick enough.

This morning his episode hurt so bad that I took him off the boob. Even though he had been nursing for 45 mins (right, left, right again) he started crying. I thought he was still hungry because of my supply, so I went to make him an ounce of pumped milk. When I got back, he had spit up all over himself. I changed him, he ate the ounce, and then he passed out.

What is making him do this? Is he getting frustrated with my flow or supply? Does he need to burp? If he is drinking enough to where he spits up then why did he guzzle the extra ounce?

Help! I feel like the most clueless BFer ever.
