I brought my own pillow, but only brought in in after labor and I alos brought a blanket from home as a comfort item.

I had 2 bags for DH and me & one for LO. We ended up staying for 4 days so DH had to runh ome for more clothes for us.

looks pretty good - agree with other's -- I brought a nursing bra but preferred a nursing TANK, so you may want that.

i also don't think you need underwear or the sling --- I brought a pillow and was so glad to have it even though I was only in the hospital for a couple days! it even helped while having contractions in the car on the way in to grip it!

I think the extra empty bag is a great suggestion. Can you tell I'm ready to go, lol???!?!

Just wanted to add that I rolled up an oversized tote and put it in my suitcase. When we were leaving we asked for extra things like pads, mesh undies, tuck's, etc., and stuck all of that and the diapers and wipes in the tote. I definitely recommend this!

If your planning on nursing you may want to bring nipple cream. The hospital gave me a small sample but by the end of our stay it was almost all. Your own pillow with non-white pillowcase (I personally would leave the nursing pillow at home, but we never used my boppy anyway). If your getting in hospital pictures done of LO make sure you have an outfit that your want them done in.

I used a rolling bag and our diaper bag. Most of the stuff I brought I ended up not using and we packed light to begin with.

I agree with the hospital mesh undies! They are great.

On your list, I would not bring the sling (I can't imagine when you would be wearing the baby in the hospital...) and the lactation cookies (unless you really like the taste of them?). I wore a nursing bra, and it was nice to have something supportive under my gown. I would also second @dagret's suggestion of a sleep mask--super helpful when the lights are left on in the MOTN by nurses. I would also brng a water bottle with a straw, like a camelbak--makes it easier to drink when you're lying in bed.

It was hot as heck in the hospital the first night but really cold after that. The hospital pillows are scratchy but I didn't bring my own bc I didn't want them to get nasty.

Besides others' suggestions, I would add
A nursing pillow
Sleep mask
Hand lotion (sooo dry in the hospital and you wash your hands a zillion times!)
I also brought some reusable grocery bags on my bag to take stuff home in.

Def bring your own pillow in a non-white case so it doesn't get mixed in with the hospital linen, and a nursing pillow.

I packed my stuff in one large duffle bag (Vera Bradley's large version), my husband packed his stuff in a backpack, and then baby's stuff was in my diaper bag (also used this as my purse). We left the Boppy and exercise ball in the car (didn't end up needing the ball, my husband got the Boppy after LO was born).

For next time, I would bring an extra empty bag with us as we received so many gifts and other stuff in the hospital (plus we tried to take home as many diapers, wipes, lotions, etc as they would let us!)

More snacks. I found I was simply ravenous in the hospital. I also agree with the PPd re: mesh underwear. It was amazing. I brought some old underwear but didn't end up wearing it. I also didn't wear my nursing bra. I found the tanks to have enough support.

Snacks! Hospital kitchens have very limited hours, and babies do not. You and your hubby will likely want food after baby is born, even in the middle of the night (or after 7pm where I delivered), and between meals after that.

@aprk: I brought my own pads and was happy I did. I started drinking Mothers Milk Tea as soon as I was allowed to drink. Also, have a postpartum kit ready for when you get home.. You'll be happy you made one.

We brought a little rolling suitcase and our diaper bag.

I third the mesh panties. But I guess it doesn't hurt to bring them. I loved having my own towel to use after I got out of the shower. The hospital towels are small and scratchy. Maybe some swim trunks for your DH in case you want to get in the shower? Oh and I brought my nipple cream with me. I started using it immediately. And I had like 5 pillows from home. It was awesome. Oh and a sweatshirt for your DH. It can get chilly at night in the hospital.

I think I brought the diaper bag for the baby's stuff. Then we brought our small rolling suitcase for DH and mine's stuff. We brought a cooler with drinks and snacks in it. And I think we had one more tote bag with stuff too.

I second leaving out the underwear. I hoarded the mesh panties... they were great the first few days! You shouldn't need towels either since the hospital will provide those. We brought a pillow and blanket for hubs, and he was grateful. The hospital pillows were flat and awful! Do you have a boppy?

You won't need underwear, unless you don't want granny underpants, but its nice to have those cuz you will be wearing pads... What about camera or video cam?

Make sure to have car seat ready...

Insurance info and id....

I know these come up a lot and I've read most of the threads, but can I ask for some eyeballs on my "what to pack for the hospital" list?

If all goes well, I am planning to labor at home as long as I can with my doula, and will stay in the hospital post-partum for ~2 days. We live about 30 minutes away, so my husband will be able to go home to check on the dog, but I don't want him to have to schlep too much back and forth.

My main question is - how many bags did you take, and how did you separate all your stuff?

Thanks for any thoughts! Here is my list:

-- During labor --
Mints/hard candy
Granola bars/snacks
Speakers and iPod
Printed birth plan
Basket of goodies for nurses

-- Postpartum --
Phone and iPad chargers
iPad
Extension cord
Lactation cookies
Purple pajamas
Gray nursing top and robe
Slippers
Nursing bra
Underwear
Shower flip flops
Toiletries
Towel
Husband shirt/underwear/deodorant
Comfy Joey sling

-- Going home --
Baby outfit/blanket
Me clothes to go home
