With 5 dogs in my house I worried about this. When someone comes over to our house ALL FIVE sound the alarm. Like stated above your LO can already hear her barking. All mine freak out and bark like crazy when someone comes over. How could it NOT wake LO you would think....nope she sleeps right through it!

Barking is tough because it becomes so ingrained and because the barking itself can be very rewarding. Bark collars also don't always solve the problem. Some dogs will just bark anyway even though the collar is uncomfortable (mine did this), or with a shock collar they'll learn there is a few second space between shocks and will bark once to set it off then a ton of times in the space between. When my dog was barking we tried a citronella collar, but all it did was leave my apartment smelling like citrus because he barked through it. The only nice thing about that was that I knew if he barked while I wasn't home. What worked was addressing the underlying problem /reason for the barking. In our case, it was separation anxiety and the barks cleared up after that. She sounds like she could be alert barking or fear barking or maybe yips when bored. Whatever you do, try not to reinforce it either by yelling or by coddling. That can work in the short run, but cause issues later. You could try teaching a command like "quiet", and praising her a lot when she's not barking. Some people also have success training their dog to bark on command, because then you can turn it off and on yourself.

There's a chance it won't bug your baby, though. We live near train tracks, which I was afraid would wake LO, but he completely tunes it out. He also ignores DH's alarm in the morning.

Wow I never realized LO could already hear the barking. I hope you're right that he sleeps through it! It's such a piercing high-pitched shrill that it's hard to imagine him sleeping through it. Maybe he'll inherit his daddy's sleep habits. DH can and does sleep through barking, thunderstorms, fireworks, his alarms (I have to wake him up every day, he has yet to find an alarm he can't sleep through).

I on the other hand wake up when our basset walks across the hardwoods on the other side of the house.

Sounds like it'll be just me not getting any sleep because of DH's yippy dog :( I kid you not, she stands next to his ear and barks, never wakes him up.

We're working on this with one of our little dogs too. She loses her mind in her crate when we come home every day, and I'm worried that we'll be carrying a sleeping baby in and she'll wake him up. Its reassuring to hear that they get used to it before they arrive!

I dk, my LO was so sleepy in the beginning it didn't bother her. However, after 2 months, she became a much lighter sleeper and the dog does wake her up. I bought a Homedics sound machine off Amazon and it definitely helps drown out the sound of the dog. I'm working with the dog - blocking her from the front window, where she barks the most and giving her "time-outs" (in the bathroom) if she doesn't listen when I redirect her.

My friend has a big dog that barks at every-freaking-thing...and doesn't stop. Once she had her baby (now 8 weeks old), the dog continued to bark, but the baby never even flinched. She'll (baby) be passed out, the dog will start freaking out, and...nothing. I vote that they get used to it!

The yipping would be the death of me! If you need to get sleep, can you crate the little one and run some kind of white noise nearby? Maybe the muffling of sounds would keep yipping down, allowing you to get some sleep.

I second Dandelion's response!
We have not one, but two yippy dogs, and our 3 week old son doesn't stir at all when they bark in his ear. One dog barks at the leaves, the wind, people sneezing... you name it. Hopefully, your LO will be used it by the time he/she arrives!

Your LO can already hear the dog and is getting used to it. I've read that when babies hear noises like dogs barking from inside the womb, they're less startled by them, and can sleep better with those kind of distractions.

DH has a small mutt that barks at EVERYTHING. Last night for example, the window was open (it's 80 degrees here) and every rustle of the leaves, every car that drove past, she barked. My basset got up to go outside, she barked, he came back in, she barked. He got in the bed, she barked. I rolled over in bed, she barked, my cell phone alarm went off, she barked.

She has a bark collar but DH keeps it so loose, she never gets corrected.

LO will be here in 2-4 weeks and I'm very worried about her barking incessantly. I barely slept last night and I have a feeling that every time he cries, she'll bark.

The basset could care less about all the stuff she barks at. He only barks if someone knocks on the door or the neighbors set off firecrackers or something like that. So it's not like she's barking at legitimate things... I just don't know what to do.
