I think the trick I learned was to back date YNAB so it pulls more information from the bank for previous periods so you're not just starting out with nothing. I searched a ton of YNAB's reddit threads.. I had a certain amount available when I added my accounts and budgeted it toward groceries, mortgage, etc that haven't been paid yet this month.
