@Coral: Are you on the web version? It says import with a little cloud next to it on a bar with other functions right above the actual transactions.

@Coral: Haha np! I was SO confused at first too and almost regretted getting it but now I can't live without it!

So if you manually put in everything, you do not give YNAB any connection to any of your accounts. But if you do, everyday when you sign in, or even every couple of hours as you're signed in (as I am on my work computer), they will detect transactions from any accounts and all you have to do is hit "import" and all the transactions appear in YNAB. As time goes on it will even be able to categorize most of it for you accurately. So all I do is import, categorize, approve and keep on budgeting.

@snowjewelz: I'm not sure what you mean. Mine doesn't interact with my bank account at all so far. Sorry...I am such a newb!

I think it's just to make your life easier so you don't have to input every single transaction and then do all the other work too. Everyday I just import so I can see everything "real time".

I think it's set up this way to encourage active budgeting. I used to use Mint, which pulls all transactions in, and it was way to easy to just... not engage. And then I'd log in and get overwhelmed. Now I have a set time once a week to work on our budget, and because I am dealing with a week's batch-import at a time I can really handle each individual transaction.

@Coral: there is no interaction. You can import from your account, but it doesn't regularly auto-update anything for you. I prefer to do everything manually, so I log into my accounts once every few days and manually add any new transactions.

So I FINALLY started using it this month but I have a question...is there any interaction between YNAB budget and your bank account or does it just ask to get the balance in your bank? If that's the case, I'm not sure why I couldn't just input that myself. Does it interact (like I buy something so YNAB is alerted and I get a notification to add a transaction?) I'm so lost!
