@runsyellowlites: Good luck. I think I am trying for baby steps. So first step is just tracking expenses and categorizing them. After that I will really tackle debt and staying on budget.

@runsyellowlites: I would say don't feel like it's all or nothing! I am getting into it very slowly due to a lack of time! But I know I will learn it all eventually and it will be worth it!
I got an email from YNAB about referring people - you'd get $6 off if I send you the link, message me if you're interested! (that goes for everyone!)

Just used the app to add transactions for the first time, fun!
Okay not fun watching a budget category go into the red or seeing my debt # increase, but fun to use none the less! lol :)

@Mrs. High Heels: I've only had a few minutes here and there to play with it, but I really like it so far. I downloaded the mobile apps to our phones and ipads this morning.
DH is not on board. His kids are still with us for another 2 weeks and his idea of quality time is spending money on eating out. So no chance of a budget for the rest of July. We will also need time to sit down and talk YNAB methodology. He was excited about the app, but doesn't understand it's not our checking account balance he's looking at ...

@cmomma17: I would do exactly what @T.H.O.U.: suggested. I always add everything manually anyway. How do you like ynab so far after playing around with it? Is DH on board too?

@cmomma17: It may depend how you are handling your credit cards. But basically just add another transaction on the "account balance" to increase the balance of the card.

My car is still hanging in there, fingers crossed I can go a little longer without paying for major repairs!

I was able to add all of my accounts to YNAB last night. So I am counting Wednesday July 17, 2013 as DAY 1!
This morning I budgeted my available funds, didn't get very far! Lol DH gets paid again tomorrow though.

Question - I added credit card balances yesterday, then this morning I got hit with a finance charge on one of the cards. How do I update to reflect that? @mrs.highheels? @T.H.O.U.?

Ugh. Just a quick budget related whine.
So yesterday we picked my DH's jeep after getting $200+ worth of repairs done on it (and we paid for repairs the month before, and a few months before that .... money pit!). I turned my car off for TWO MINUTES and when I tried to turn it back on it was dead. :( It worked this morning after being jumped, but there is definitely an issue there (something we have already paid to have repaired once in the past). So yay, MORE car repairs! :(
This is why we really need to buckle down with a budget, meal planning, etc. We need to replace two vehicles, we need a bigger place to live .... the list goes on.
I tried to work on YNAB this morning at home and couldn't connect to the internet to check some balances online. My computer is on it's last legs. DH got really upset trying to fix it, he said "If one more thing we own breaks!!!!" :(
So frustrating.

@cmomma17: Even if you can't get to your YNAB software, there still may be a few things you can gather (just in excel or somewhere).

First is a balance of your accounts and maybe your July transactions if you want to go ahead and download them.

Second is your rough budget of categories and amounts.

Maybe you can work or think about that?

I love it! It definitely is confusing at first. I was able to set mine up mid month. It was really confusing for me because we pay everything on credit cards and pay it off every month so that was confusing starting with all the cc debt.

I've been using it since Feb and it's really helped me get a handle on our finances. I recommend putting transactions in as soon as possible. I usually do it in my phone right away. For a while I was getting behind, DH was forgetting transactions, and I was having to comb through my cc statements to enter transactions I forgot. I got on DH and he's better now but I still log onto his Discover account to make sure he put it all in there.

@cmomma17: I've been a SAHM since moving to Connecticut, but I'm on borrowed time as I'm looking for a job & know that my days home with my toddler are limited. The Back to School sales are driving me crazy because I know that once September rolls around I'll (probably) be going back to work!

I understood exactly what you described, so I'll take out the bills I've already paid this month and see what I need to do with our remaining funds till Aug 1 rolls around. Thanks!

@ktdid23: from what I've gathered so far .... you put in your current checking account balance and then you ask yourself "what do I need to do with THIS money before I get paid again?" so what are the next upcoming bills .... Does that make sense?
You probably are in the red now because you entered bills from the beginning of the month that were already paid.
Like if I set mine up tonight, I wouldn't put in Rent (due the 1st) or any other bills we have already paid. I would go back and put them in later (closer to August 1) when our next round of paychecks come in.
I hope I explained that okay.

ETA: You're a step ahead of me, I have to wait until after work tonight to set mine up! :) I totally recommend watching a few of their videos. Look under "support" and then "getting started" on their website. I'm excited for you!

@Mrs. High Heels: thanks! I think I will play around and then use the fresh start for August 1 then, you're the best! :)

@T.H.O.U.: good advice, thanks! I will set it up soon (tonight if LO lets me have @ home computer time)

@jhd: woo hoo! I'm glad you're having such success! :) we have enough money for sure. we just don't stick to a budget so our money sometimes gets "wasted" on little things and then life gets stressful when something bigger comes along like a doctor visit, car repair, etc. I want to plan more for the future, just have to drag DH along with me ;)

@runsyellowlites: did you guys watch any of the videos? There are a bunch on their website under "support" I snuck a peek at a few today at work and they're very helpful. There are also free online classes. Sign up and then you don't have to view them live, they will send you a recorded link. Although it looks like if you CAN watch at the live time, you can directly ask questions! It's taken me quite a few years to get the hang of budgeting! Don't give up hope. I'll support you if you need help! :)

Just downloaded it @CMOMMA17 :-)

Question - I put in all of my monthly bills/categories, but then it asked me for the current balance of my checking account. Now it looks like I'm majorly negative on the account. How can I set this up for mid-month without having to start from scratch on Aug 1?

Sidenote: how is Aug 1 a real thing in 3 weeks?! Did summer not JUST start??
