@bluestriped bee: huh, cool! Do you know if the doxie has an app you can use to scan from your phone? and does it label the receipts for you? Cuz that could be so much cheaper!

eta: just read the article! it does seem like the doxie is better, at least they don't try to sell you additional services.

@Mrs. High Heels: i think it ranges from 100$ to 400$, but i have heard that it is AMAZING. it even totals all your costs and separates all your GST (which is so beneficial for my husband who pays gst quarterly). Such a time saver. I'm so excited to get it!

@.twist.: Wow, I think something like Neat Receipts would be really helpful for us! Is it expensive? I hate saving receipts, and sometimes losing them! Oh I just thought of another pro to YNAB... SPLIT CATEGORIES. For example, sometimes when I shop at Target... the things I purchase can fall under multiple categories (groceries, household, baby stuff...)... and I love that I can input one transaction and parse it out into multiple budget categories so it gets allotted appropriately.

@sunshineandsushi: Yay, so glad to hear that! I love sharing with people the things I love. :)

@.twist.: I see you already got the free trial, but just wanted to chime in with my two cents! We just finished our first month of using YNAB and I am still really liking it. DH thought it was just a glorified spreadsheet when I first bought it too, but now he agrees it's wayyy more than that.

@Mrs. High Heels: Thank you for turning me onto YNAB, all your posts finally wore me down to give it a shot!

@Mrs. High Heels: That's awesome! Oh, and Neat Receipts is a program that categorizes and accounts for all your receipts. you just feed them through a machine, it reads them and labels them and you just have to organize them however you need to in files. For online filing. I'm going to be doing it for my husbands company. Freshbooks goes hand in hand with neat receipts, it's an invoicing/tax recording program. My husband will be able to invoice directly to clients from freshbooks. so, if they all were used together, I think people would have insanely organized filing systems.

@Mrs. High Heels: ah! no, that does make sense! I was wondering how to get it to show up in that right column, but that makes total sense that I have to wait until next month for the roll over. The set up is SOO much like my old spread sheets, but it's way more efficient. I caught on pretty quick and already have a good idea of what's going on, just a few little differences. :) Thank you so much for the tips.

@.twist.: nope you don't need to enter anything! so you know how there are 3 columns? the very right-hand column will show how much remains in that budget category. if you didn't pay out that bill this month it will show $10.17 in that column... and it automatically rolls over into the next month. am i making sense or just confusing you even more??

@Mrs. High Heels: ok, wait, i have another question. I just set up the AMA category, and put in the 10$ for the budget. Now, when the month comes to an end, do I enter anything into the outflow or inflow?

@Mrs. High Heels: AH, thanks, that makes so much sense. I was trying to look at it like, having the total and when I paid a quarter of it, it would show 1/4 of the amount paid. But, it's so much more simple the way you do it!

@.twist.: I have a master category called "Annual Expenses", and I basically divide up that once a year bill by 12 months. So $122/12 = $10.17... I would allot $10.17 into a category called "AMA membership" and let it roll over month after month. By the time your bill is due next year, you'll have the $122 just sitting there all ready to go!

One of the beauty's of YNAB is no un-anticipated expenses! You plan for everything so you don't get slammed by an unexpected annual bill that you conveniently forgot about. :)

For the quarterly bill, I would divide by 4.

I love YNAB. I don't give them my banking info as I enter transactions in myself. We started this past September and have already saved money plus almost paid off my credit card in addition to having to add child are as an expense. I actually feel in control of our money and not just tracking expenses. It has made us so much more prepared for upcoming expenses such as car insurance or christmas gifts.

The email lessons are great. They only give a small amount of info at a time and makes it easier to digest the financial tips such as the 4 rules.

@Mrs. High Heels: I also will tell anyone who will sit still how great it is!

YNAB is a definite YAY for me! I tell whoever will listen about it, hahah...

Is it easy to get behind? Do you trust their website? I'm a little hesitant to give other websites any of my banking info... Pretty easy to setup, but there is a small learning curve. They have tons of videos, tutorials, and an entire forum on their website though to help guide you through any questions you have. You don't need to give them any banking info since it's not automated like Mint. They do this intentionally because you're less likely to have visibility/accountability into your finances when everything is automated. I manually input all my transactions into YNAB, but you can also download your bank or credit card statements and import it that way if you prefer not to input things one by one.

Tell me what the pros and cons are. And do programs like neat receipt and freshbooks (for small businesses) work well with YNAB?
Pros: It tracks roll overs really easily, I love their "4 rules" that are the key to YNAB, you can pull reports and they have pie charts to give you visuals on how you're spending. If you go over your budget in a certain category you can choose to subtract that from your next month's budget for that specific category or subtract from your overall budget so there is room to make up for overspending. It's super easy to plan for future expenses or save for vacations. It is true budgeting, not just expense tracking! It comes with a free smartphone app that syncs all your info seamlessly - so easy to check how much you have left in a certain category when you're out and about. There's a lot more but too much to write about here.

I don't know what neat receipts and freshbooks are... never heard of them.

Eta: also, what is better about YNAB than my fancy spreadsheet? I had a fancy spreadsheet too. I promise you, it is better.

Yay for YNAB! I used to use Mint and it was OK, but I found it didn't always categorize things correctly and I'd have to go in and manually move things around or assign them a category. With YNAB I can create my own very specific categories and it's not that much more work than with Mint since I was having to manipulate it anyway.

I think YNAB actually makes me more accountable than other programs because I do manually enter my expenditures from receipts and stuff, so if I have to enter something I know was irresponsible spending, I feel guilty, LOL.

I also like that you can sync it to your phone, computer, your SO's phone, etc.

I am not sure about it's compatibility with neat receipt and freshbooks. There is a learning curve and I would highly recommend watching the instructional videos, but I've found it to be the best budgeting tool for me.

I like the app while I was on the free trial.

As for banking info, you don't have to link your account. You can enter your purchases manually.

I do use Manilla to keep track of my balances and such but YNAB for budgeting is great. The YNAB app on your iphone is great when entering your purchases.
