I like show tunes so I'll only listen to some of my music. Lots of them are very inappropriate ... like avenue q. Even when she was too young to know the difference I wouldn't listen with her there because it weirds me out.

We never listened to kid music but we almost always listen to christian nock of sorts so theres nothing innapropriate. My daughter is totally a head banger at heart but she also loves flyleaf and knows just about every song they play on positive life radio as well as a good majority of songs by the aquabats :)

@venice4504: I don't think this makes you a horrible parent at all.

I feel that the "kid" world is one carefully crafted by us parents to ease the transition of our children entering what is eventually the "real" world, at least while they are new and learning.

It's your discretion as to how long your child gets to thrive as a "kid," and when your child is prepared for the world we really live in. Music is a beautiful thing because it can resonate with a person at any age, in my opinion... hence us immersing RJ in music of all kinds (except gangsta rap and death metal... for obvious reasons).

I know it makes me a horrible parent, but I can't stand "kid" music so we listen to whatever I'm listening to in the car. Whenever LMFAO's "I'm sexy and I know it" comes on we always do the wiggle to the chorus though:

"Check it out! (x2)
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, yeah
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, yeah
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, yeah
Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wig, yeah yeah
I'm sexy and I know it
Do the wiggle man
I do the wiggle man

If we have anything to say about it our baby will love artists from David Bowie, Phish, NIN, talking heads and tons of electronic music too. DH and I have VERY ecclectic tastes in music and plan on sharing this with our LO once they are born, In utero they have been to quie an array of live music already!!!

Our LO isn't on the scene yet, but we can't wait to expose him to loads of music! In fact, we're starting his exposure early and DH played my belly "Pony Boy" by Bruce Springsteen last night while we were in bed. I fully expect our son to be exposed to all our fav music. I guess I don't see any reason to drive myself crazy with endless loops of crappy kiddie music, rather than expanding horizons.

Music has always been a constant presence in Rob Jr's life... from when he was a newborn (with the gentle sounds of Rockabye Baby) to a constant stream of kids' music that we've fired up for him wherever we go.

Lately I've started having him listen to "non-baby" music, including rock, jazz, and electronica (mostly when I'm alone with him, as my wife isn't too crazy about what she calls "my" music). He enjoys it immensely, at first completely silent as he absorbs the track... then pretend-jamming on whatever he's holding like a guitar (today's instrument was a toy baseball bat). Pretty hilarious to see him jam along with Muse and Jimmy Eat World.

What are your thoughts on music for your LO? Age-appropriate music only, or sharing your personal musical tastes with the baby? Any favorites emerging?
