@spaniellove: Yep! I say go for it. And trust your gut. Sounds like you might already know what the answer is :)

@sweetooth: Trying even one class at the other place wouldn't be a bad idea since I might wonder forever if I don't, right? I kind of got the impression that I'd always feel like an outsider with this group of ladies and in that town, whereas we go to the other town at least once a week and feel completely at home.

@Modern Daisy: That explains why she was showing a modification to a pose that no one was doing. I realize now that the instructor has her email address on her site and I can ask her questions. Thank you!

@spaniellove: First off, yay! I know what it's like to want to start yoga and you just need to take that first step! Second, I'd echo a lot of what @Modern Daisy said. The instructor should be able to respond to the different needs of the people in the class and help you get into poses that you are capable of or at least add guidance for increasing the difficulty of a pose.

I think the key components for me to enjoy a class have been a great instructor that I trust, and good company. Maybe you can also try a class at that other studio and compare how you feel after that one, with how you feel now. And then decide?

In my experience, a good yoga instructor will teach to the individuals in the room and give different variations of the poses based on flexibility levels. I'm usually at the lower end of the flexibility spectrum since yoga is so huge here and every class I've been to is at least half filled with people who are really fit. If I were you, I would try going to another class but speak to the instructor first about your goals and ask if they can show more advanced versions of the poses and adjust you accordingly. I've never had an issue with instructors wanting to do this!

After wanting to do a yoga class forever, I finally bit the bullet and did a beginner class this morning! So I tried a place that I thought had the best balance of times and styles, and am feeling kind of meh about it. Everyone in the class was 50-60+ and pretty inflexible - not their fault, I'm sure it happens to everyone eventually and time will catch up with me too! It was frustrating for me because I'm a bit more flexible and want to focus on getting my poses right so I can do something more challenging.

Is this just how beginner classes are or do you think a different yoga studio would have a different vibe? A lot of the population in this area is around that age so if it's likely that every class is like this, I'd consider driving further to a studio that's geared more towards my age (and has great classes like plant-based eating, cloth diapering, etc)...it would just mean I couldn't go as often.
