@DesertDreams88: I'm pretty sure all babies love yoga. And I scaled back (because increased flexibility was making me sore) long before baby started getting in the way! Have a great pregnancy and be safe!

Thank you everyone for your feedback :) Looking back I think I was a bit overzealous Monday night but all the movements were pretty slow and methodical, and I know my baby is down LOW in my pelvis soooo.... fingers crossed the baby loves yoga! lol

I think you're ok with your practice as long as you modify things that aren't comfortable. After my first trimester, I kept my upward bow as part of my practice as well as most arm balances that I am comfortable with. I know other yogis who kept headstands and handstands in their practices through the end of the third trimester! I only did a mermaid variation of pigeon but I've never seen anyone say that King Pigeon was not ok. As long as I wasn't on my stomach or a pose that required me to be flat on my back, I was fine.

Modified frog pose was amazing for my hips! I just made sure I protected my belly. Happy practicing yogi!!!

I did a lot of pigeon and probably could have done the mermaid variation. King pigeon isn't something I do in my regular practice but once I had a bump it wasn't comfortable to do more than a slight back bend, so I wouldn't have done that one. If it's not uncomfortable yet, I'd say go for it.

@DesertDreams88: As a more "novice" practitioner, I don't think I would be comfortable doing King Pigeon during pregnancy...but pigeon pose is a fantastic hip-opener and recommended during pregnancy! I think it's a case of "do what you're comfortable with" and "listen to your body!"

I did prenatal yoga during second and third trimesters with my first. All I really remember were lots of cat/cow and squats. I skipped the classes with my second and just did a lot of those.

i've been taking a regular yoga class and making modifications. i stopped doing certain moves when they became uncomfortable, like deep twists and inversions (shoulder stands). i know that isn't a concrete measure. at 37 weeks, i still do pigeon pose and a modified king pigeon (i don't fully arch my back and reach back, i just kinda stick my arm out and grab my foot)--pigeon pose is actually great for sciatica, which i was getting in the middle of my second trimester. i'm also still doing a modified upward dog--i'm not arching as much, and i do put my knees on the ground. with standing forward bends i have to open my legs pretty wide.

congratulations on your pregnancy and good luck! that's awesome that you're going to continue with yoga.

I don't think I'm bendy enough to do the second variation! But if I could, I don't think I would be concerned about it. It's essentially like a back bend. Do it as long as it feels good. It's really the twisting you need to worry about.

@anya, @alphagam84, @fliegepilzhut, @kayakgirl73:

What do you all think about pigeon pose, with the variations?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6guTrn_lesI

I normally think of it as a hip opener, and it's my favorite pose, though I've only done the easy version of it since getting pregnant (I used to do the 3rd variation). On Monday night without thinking I shifted into the 2nd variation, had a slight crack in my mid-back so I backed off and turned it into Mermaid Pose (1st variation). What do you think? Too much arch, even though it's supported by my legs?

I'm doing a pre-natal class and everything is specific to pregnancy. I had never take a yoga class before just did some moves with the Wii Fit or some yoga type stuff in more general fitness classes. I know twists are a big no no. We do a fair bit of cat-cows, down dogs, Warrior One & two, Lunge type stuff, Some squats, mostly assisted, some balance stuff and some weeks we use the yoga ball.

@DesertDreams88: I think it's completely normal to feel anxious--heck, I still get nervous occasionally and I'm staring down my due date in about 6weeks! I practiced yoga, including some pretty intense flow classes, for about 3-4 months before I got pregnant (via IVF). The things that I have specifically avoided have been "closed twists" and any asana that puts excess pressure on my abdomen (sometimes widening the hips/stance makes a big difference). Inversions (unless you are REALLY experienced) are another no-no, but that's due to risk of falls. And in general, I've been practicing more conservatively, because pregnancy is associated with looser ligaments and thus, an increased risk of strain or injury. Hope this helps!

The only things I don't do are lay on my belly (stopped when it got uncomfortable, around 14 weeks) and I don't do any twists involving the core anymore. You can still do back bends as long as it's comfortable. I tried a few weeks ago at 20 weeks and it didn't feel good so I won't try again.

@Avivoca: My instructor is a wonderful woman and SO encouraging, but she just says to listen to my body, which.... isn't very helpful. She knows I'm pregnant and I asked her to warn me if she thinks I'm over-extending myself. I don't even feel pregnant (11wks today), and it's not like my body warned me before miscarrying last time, so..... yeah.

I did my regular class with modifications- once I had a belly I didn't do any twists, or backbends but most everything else was ok. Like I still did pigeon but with blocks. Forward folds were fine as long as I didn't stay down too long (aggravated my heartburn). And pretty much all the balancing poses. If the class started doing something that I couldn't/didn't want to do I just spent extra time in down dog/child's pose or whatever felt good that day.

With yoga, there are tons of conflicting guidelines online about what is "ok" and "not ok" in the various trimesters. My instructor and some of the online advice say to just "Listen to your body" and while I "get" that in theory, I'm a person who prefers the concrete, not the abstract. I have a hard time "trusting" my body with a history of loss and PCOS.

So, for those of you who did yoga during your pregnancy, what modifications did you make to your practice? What kinds of poses did your practice generally avoid, and generally focus on? I'm interested in hearing from a variety of pregnant ladies, vs. just a random yoga blogger online. Maybe @Mrs. Scooter: will pop in with her yoga wisdom :)

My experience:
Before getting pregnant, I did intermediate yoga 2-3 times .... no inversions or arm balances, but lots of deep backbends, hip openers, forward folds, twists, balancing poses, etc.

I didn't do yoga for weeks 3-6 of my current pregnancy, since this baby took some extra work & time to get... I returned to yoga in the middle of my 7th week, downsizing to 1-2 times a week (nausea, fatigue)

I'm trying to cut down on the amount of back-bending and twisting I do, since that seems to be recommended against in the first trimester. But that's a difficult guideline for me... I love up-dogs, king pigeon, and mermaid pose. I've hesitantly continued doing those, but stopped upward bow, standing backbend, and wheel.

Also, I attend class at a gym, not a studio, so there are no options for a prenatal-style class. Studios are about triple the cost of my gym, and I LOVE my instructor.
