I have been going to regular yoga since I was about 11 weeks along (was out of town for a couple weeks right after my BFP and then the exhaustion kicked in and I could barely get myself off the couch, let alone into downward dog). My instructor doesn't do prenatal classes but was familiar with restrictions and modifications so she gave me a rundown of what they are before my first class back. However, she also calls out mods to me as we go along, so she'll give a general direction to the class and then say something like "PurplePeony, you should open in the opposite direction so make sure you have your right hand planted instead of your left" or "PP, I want you to just stay here and hold this pose instead of going to the next one." one concern both my midwife and my yoga instructor raised was falling, since your center of balance starts to shift and your joints start to loosen, so I usually set up in the back of the studio where there is a barre and use it if i need help or just modify the balance poses. Anyway, point being that if you're going with friends, they're probably going to notice that you're doing alternate poses anyway... I didn't care because I don't really know any of the people in my class that well, but I don't think I could have hidden it unless I feigned a back injury or something. So I think in your situation, getting credit toward prenatal classes is probably a good plan!

I wouldn't go. Besides inversions, there are poses involving laying on your back that can be problematic even in the first trimester. I am only ten weeks and can't lie on my back anymore without being really dizzy. You also shouldn't do deep forward bends. Here are some other restrictions on poses. http://www.fitsugar.com/What-Avoid-Yoga-When-Pregnant-22617147
That's why I wouldn't go to a class led by someone who doesn't know these things. Also, you will probably be modifying/worrying too much to really enjoy it. Can you get your money back?

I go to prenatal yoga and the only thing the instructor does differently for women in the first trimester is to avoid any abdominal excersizes. But it's also prenatal yoga to begin with, so it's all modified to be safer. If I were you, I would just ask for the credit unless you can maybe hook up with an actual prenatal yoga instructor who can give you guidelines that make you comfortable enough to go to regular yoga classes.

"Listen to your body" was the only real exercise advice my OB gave when it came to exercises like yoga or Pilates. I would feel uneasy with an instructor that wasn't familiar with yoga during pregnancy, though.

I did regular yoga most all of my pregnancy. You just have to avoid inversions (legs going over your head). That's the ont "unsafe" pose. To make it easier as you get bigger, the teachers will give you other poses to accommodate your belly :) but that probably won't be an issue until fall and then they'll have prenatal for you

I'm not a yoga buff, but I don't think an instructor who says "I know nothing about pregnancy and yoga" isn't a good sign. I did prenatal classes and then regular classes and things seemed similar, although I know a lot was modified for our comfort. Regular classes probably won't hurt you at all, but I'd probably wait for prenatal classes.

So about a week before I got a BFP I signed up for unlimited yoga for the summer. I went to two classes, then got the positive.

I asked my doctor about it, and she said there are some poses that I should avoid, so before each class I should ask the instructor what to avoid. She said that if they simply said "yoga is fine" in pregnancy, I should avoid going and wait until they offer their pre-natal class in the fall.

I emailed the yoga place explaining that I was pregnant, and asked if there was anything I should avoid, or if I should get a credit for what I paid and sign up for some pre-natal classes in the fall. I said I didn't feel comfortable asking each instructor at the beginning of class what to avoid, because I've been going with friends that do not know I'm pregnant.

I heard back today, and they suggest that I "listen to my body" to know what to do and what is too much. They didn't specify any specific poses or things to avoid. I'm kind of worried. I haven't done any yoga in over a year except these two classes, and I don't know if I'm good at listening to my body.

Should I just ask for a credit and sign up for a prenatal class in the fall? Other ideas?

ETA: also worried because when she replied to my email, I could see an email below from one of the other instructors saying "I don't know anything about pregnancy and yoga, any thoughts?"
