A good friend came to visit me last year and revealed that her relationship with her long-time BF was in crisis. I never liked him anyway, and when she opened up about things he was doing to her (not really abusive, but very shitty), I told her she needed to leave him, unquestionably. After her visit, she *did* break up with him, but a few months later they got back together. It was really awkward and we didn't talk much for a few months. I just went out to visit her this past weekend, which I was kind of worried about because she lives with her SO, and I'm sure he's surmised that I counseled her to leave him last year! But he was cordial to me and we just avoided talking about their relationship all weekend. I can still see some major red flags though, and I just wish she'd move on. :bummed:

@mrbee: It also depends on why I don't like the ex. Like, with the ex-bff, the ex had cheated and also was terribly rude to me and most of my ex-bff's friends all the time. But thinking about it more, I guess I never told another good friend who was on a short break that I didn't think his gf was good for him, but I really, really liked her individually--I just thought their dynamic was off (she seemed to get upset with him over stupid things and they bickered in public a lot). And it's a good thing I didn't say anything because they're married now!

A friend in college said she broke up with her bf, and I was visibly excited. Then she said that they got back together. Oops. She knew I didn't like him though (for good reason).

@nana87: I personally prefer honesty, but I've learned that many people don't! For my closest friends, I go down the honesty path... for everyone else, I just say offer my condolences and ask how they're doing!

WOW! No, can't say that I've been in that situation. Good story to remember though, just in case!

Yep, I told my ex-bff that I thought she was better off without her ex after the ex cheated on her, and they're still together over 10 years later. And that was probably the end of our friendship. I don't regret it though becuase I feel like honesty and looking out for your friend's interests are tantamount.

...they get back together with them and get married and have kids?

Awkward... I did that once and after it blew up in my face, I never told anyone what I thought of their ex, ever again. Saved me from several rounds of deja vu!
