It depends. Mostly on how busy I am and what I'm doing when I listen to the message :silly:

I do know that in my job I make lots of calls to people and it's very much appreciated when, if I have the wrong number, someone will call back and tell me. If not i'll just keep calling...

When I moved to Chicago, I got a landline so my students' parents could call me without my cell. I continually got collect calls from the Cook County Jail. I obviously wasn't going to accept charges just to say they got the wrong number. One time, the guy yelled "pick up the f-ing phone!" when he was supposed to say his name. Super uncomfortable.

I'd probably call back, but I wouldn't be too concerned if it was just an appointment confirmation.

@Mrs. Pen: I didn't get the context, I hope the doctor and patient had extensive discussions previously. My HMO always makes it a point to ask if they can leave information in a message on your voicemail so I'm sure they had discussed it to some extent. But I almost cried for the woman because it was an awful message and an awful way to receive it.

I got a voicemail from a doctor recently for the wrong number. He sounded distracted because he started the message with "Hello Cord- (long pause, paper shuffle) Hello Susan, your results are in and ..." I forget the exact wording but it was a lymphoma diagnosis. I looked up the doctor's name and it matched a legit doctor in my HMO. I didn't call back since there was no number and I didn't find one quickly. I would have if he had left a number. Ugh, it was an awful message.

@Mrs. Pen: I've responded to EMAILS from medical offices (that were clearly personalized, not spam/phishing) for the same reason. They were repeatedly sending me info on someone else's contact prescription. Not exactly terribly private/confidential but still....HIPPA, anyone?!??!

For anything else, I'd probably call back if it seemed important/like the caller was waiting for a reply...or if they called more than once.

@periwinklebee: OMG!!!! So did you change your number?!?!

Once when I got a new cell phone number, at first I was getting quite a few X rated voicemails. Needless to say, I did not call them back. I mentioned it to my brother, and he and his friend - I don't know why - called the local strip club and confirmed one of the strippers had previously had that number.

From a doctors office, I'd return the call and let them know their error because that's a serious HIPAA violation. I work as a nurse so I'm probably more cognoscente of that stuff.

Any other wrong number, just delete.

Depends on the message. If they were just calling to confirm an appointment I'd probably ignore it, but if they were calling with a change or results or something important I'd call back.

@Mamaof2: I would call them back and let them know. Since you called to make the appt, they may have pulled the number from caller ID and have it wrong in that person's chart.

Voicemails I would just delete. I get a lot of wrong email address emails though, and sometimes I'll respond to those saying it's the wrong email - once there was a grandparent that was sending photos to a grandchild, things like that.

I've actually done this but it wasn't a doctor. Someone from a car dealership called my number to tell someone their license plates were ready. I called the dealership back and let them know they called the wrong number. They were very grateful.
It took 30 seconds and I wondered if the other person was waiting or in a hurry to hear from them, so I figured why not.
