If you're not bothered by it, I'd go with a smile and a simple "Thanks, things are going well" or "Thanks, the baby is growing right on track." For those that are less of a compliment and more of a rude observation, I give a more confused "Thanks?" response, so they know it was awkward but I'm still technically being polite.

Sometimes folks just don't know what to say at all, so they blurt out whatever they think of first.

Miss Manners would say to respond "Thank You!" to rude observational comments like that. Regardless of how it was meant, you're telling that rude observer that you're choosing to take it as a compliment.

I'm personally against all body comments towards pregnant women in general. I get them all the time since I'm mostly belly, so many people actually praising me for only gaining it in my belly and not getting 'fat'. I've been the victim of two drunken episodes where I couldn't get the person to stop talking about how 'amazing' my body is, no matter how hard I tried to thank them and change the subject.

I know it comes from a good place, so I don't berate them or give a snotty comment back, but I think it's really rude since clearly I have no control over how my body chooses to add the weight I'm supposed to be gaining, so they're suggesting that if I hadn't gained it this way it wouldn't be acceptable. Plus, some women who have high risk pregnancies are actually sensitive about the sizes of their babies, so to hear compliments on how 'small' or 'big' you are could be really upsetting for them.

I like the idea of acknowledging that the BABY is growing ... I really enjoy it when my friends notice growth between the times we see each other, but I'm not sure I'd like co-workers (though, I work at home).

No one said that to me when I was pregnant with my first, and I'm not very far into my second, but I feel like I'd be a smartass and say something like "I AM!?" while looking incredulous.

"I know! S/he is getting so big!"
???

I like @ash 's answer. I don't think there's necessarily a reason to be sarcastic with people when it's obvious they were trying to be complimentary or friendly (though it's really fun to come up with snarky comebacks! ). If they're commenting on your size to be nasty, it's another story entirely. When people say something to me (pregnancy related or not), that is really inappropriate or unwarranted, I generally just give them an eyebrow raise and no verbal response.

I honestly wasn't terribly offended by comments on my bump - I was excited that people could finally tell I was pregnant. I only comment on belly size to my close friends, but I usually say something along the lines of "omigosh I think I can see bump today! you look so cute!" Hope I'm not inadvertently upsetting anyone.

I wouldn't want people to think I'm completely rude or batsh*t crazy. Makes me wish there was some kind of sarcasm font~could be so much fun.

In the beginning when I was first showing around 17 weeks I would respond to belly comments with “what are you talking about? I just had a huge lunch. Thanks” The sarcastic tone fits my personality and it seems to make people laugh and move on. Now that I’m 26 weeks and already look like I have some sort of small soccer ball under my shirt the comments of how BIG I’m getting are a little more common. It’s typically coworkers and my response has been “you ain’t seen nothin’ yet”. I’m trying to stay light hearted about it right now since all of my gain has luckily been belly bump. I’m not looking forward to the last month when I figure I’ll start puffing out in all directions on all body parts! At that point I’ll probably just respond with a mean glare and “thanks”.

"That's usually what happens as a pregnancy goes along!"

I haven't had to deal with too many comments, thankfully, but my parents acted sort of shocked that I was switching over to maternity bottoms (or at least things with stretchier waists) around 16.5-17 weeks. Um...how long did they expect me to stay in regular clothes? It's not like most of mine have a lot of give in them to start with, and I see no reason to be uncomfortable if I don't have to be!
